Heyward not at voluntary minicamp

We could ask the question; what is Heyward's motivation to continue playing?

• Looking to get a ring before retirement? - not very likely this will happen considering the team around him and the competition in the conference
• More money? - how much motivation is this at this point? And do you really want to extend a guy of his age that is in it for padding the bank account?
• Stack stats for a HOF bid? - As good as Heyward is/was I have a hard time believing he will get in.
• Love of the game? - hmm, maybe. But somewhere along the way your body starts saying 'I don't love it this much'....
• Nothing else to do - I find this hard to believe. Heyward has a very active charity in the city. And his money will allow him to do pretty much anything he wants to do in his post-football life.
• Prove the fans wrong - Umm, this could be a pretty strong motivation. But if the team around him fails this season what does him playing really prove?
• Enjoys his BMOC role on the team - well it is good for his podcast content anyway

I think he wants to get into the Hall.

Probably needs 2 more 1st team AP.

I think that's why he wants to play 3 more years.

But I don't think he'll get in (unless he has a great playoff on the road to a SB?).

Most football players want to play until they can?t anymore.

and as we have seen, some football players can?t handle life after football.

I think he wants to continue playing because he thinks he can continue playing at a high level.

I think this strategy would have worked for him last contract.

But I don't think his value is high enough to demand this now.

I don't think the team should guarantee Connor's roster spot. Although he's a core ST player and a guy who isn't useless on offense (but doesn't really have a good defined role). So I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a cheap 2nd contract with us.

When a star is aging and on the downside it's often an uneasy situation. Heyward on and off the field has been special for us for a long time.
I just hope we can squeeze out one more good year of Sunday ball out of him and let the chips fall at year end. Players, be it free agents or first rounders, are paid on what the team expects them to do and not what they have done in the past. If I had to speculate I would say that regardless of when Cam retires he stays in the Steeler family in some capacity. I'm not sure anyone would disagree with wanting this regardless of how it ends on the field. I do believe 24 will be Cam's last as a Steeler and most likely his last overall.
Circle of football life may bring us a Deone Walker, Kenny Grant or a Landon Jackson a year from now. Beyond 2024 Cam may still be a great asset to the organization even if no longer as a player.
