Good news is that I think it's only a one year trial with this rule. We can hope it won't be permanent.
Interesting. I wonder if we'll see more squib kicks, too. That could actually be kind of fun.

    Good point.

I'd be okay with it, if you got the ball at the spot of the fair catch. Why give team a 20 yard play for deciding not to play if they fair catch it on the 5 yard line? Dumb rule imo.

Move the kickoffs back 5 yards, then you will have lots of returns. It used to be such a good play. I don't want to say remember when back in the day when we took the kickoff back for a score?

They might as wee spot the ball of the 25 yard line, and go straight to commercial.
The Steelers had a great draft in 2023. However better play calling / coaching is badly needed. Tomlin is 19-18-1 in last 38 games played and hasn't won a playoff game in six years and counting. Nor has hired anyone good to his coaching staff. Think about that. But Khan and Weidl appear to have better management on the salary cap and focused on the right free agents and draft needs.

Thinking about all the times players take a kick out of the end zone and we get upset because they barely make it to the 15.

How many players will have the discipline to fair catch it vs trying to make a play?

Bottom line is it diminishes the special teams aspect in the sport, and I think that's a negative. Personally, I used to enjoy the game of chess to see whether a team would dare kick to guys like Hester or Mitchell. Now, teams score and the ensuing kickoff is mostly a foregone conclusion.

They'll attack the punt game next as this comment back in March suggested,

Rich McKay, chairman of the NFL?s competition committee, said the league looked at several ideas to change the punt play, which currently has the highest rate of injuries and penalties.

Frankly, I would not hate this. I think it is already just a waste of time.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

In fifty years, the NFL will be an unhittable QB in a red jersey throwing to 8 WRs while 8 DBs scramble to cover them. No more backs, OL, DL, LBs, TEs...the LOS is where all the injuries happen.

ST coaches are (obviously) irate. Hearing many analysts say their going to their drawing boards to screw this new rule on hopes it will be removed next year.
    might see sone of these.

    Squibb kicking.
