    An ILB at every pick

Good to be back. Let's take a look at Off Ball Backers. Here is my preferences on a legit ILB prospect at each pick the Steelers currently own for the 2023 draft. And a couple of extras for picks we don't have.

1/17- Nolan Smith-Georgia-probably the closest guy physically to Ryan Shazier you could want. Played edge in school but has the chops and run stuffing ability to play off ball in the Steelers system

2/32- Jack Campbell-Iowa-this could be a tad early but the league won't let him get to 49. Just a really solid football player in every regard. Maybe its the black and gold but he feels like a Steeler

2/49- Trenton Simpson-Clemson- is a better athlete than a football player at this point. High ceiling player who needs a year or 2 to develop

3/80- Nic Herbig-Wisconsin- besides the cutsie brother angle this kid screams Steeler. Like smith will need to transition inside. Coverage skills will need work but he is a coaches dream. I'd like to take him about 20 picks later here, but 120 will be too late.

4/120-Noah Sewell-Oregon- a thumper. Physical ILB that Steelers fans would love. Gets lost in coverage but a physical specimen

5th-no pick-Henry To'o To'o-Alabama- experienced player at a big time school, does everything well but nothing exceptional will play 10 years but never sniff a Pro Bowl

6th-no pick-Aubrey Miller Jr-Jackson State- a pure cover guy, almost more of a box safety, small school competion but can cover better than most of the guys going day 1 &2

7/235-SirVocea Dennis-Pittsburgh- small size and a liability in coverage, Marcus Allen 2.0

7/242- Mouhamoud Diabate-Utah- special teams player, looks the part but can't cover and inconsistent against the run
    2023 Mock- Includes 2 trades. Trade 2/32 & 7/241 to LV for 2/38, 3/100 & 6/214
Trade 2 sends Kevin Dotson to the NYG for 5/172

    1/17-Darnell Wright-OT-Tennessee
    2/38-Will McDonald-Edge-Iowa St
    2/49-Tyrique Stevensen-CB-Miami
    3/80-Marvin Mims-WR-Oklahoma
    3/100-Nic Herbig-ILB-Wisconsin
    4/120-Andrew Vorhees-OL-USC
    5/172-Dorian Thompson Robinson-QB-UCLA
    6/214-Kaevon Merriweather-S-Iowa
    7/234-Brayden Willis-TE-Oklahoma

Great to have you back SKL, you were missed!

You are my fellow draftnik brother on the board. Like the ILB in every round, but I think Sewell and To'o To'o are both at least a round before where you have them here.

Good digging, though. Campbell would be my top ILB target. He fits.

I don't necessarily disagree. I think this is where their value lies to the Steelers.

Smith is special but he stated he's not an off the ball backer he's an edge.

    Thanks Steelerkeylargo, great job.

Do you think the FO see ILB as a priority (one round or two) ?

I am glad to see you have recovered. Some picks in you mock I agree with, especially Daward Jones.

Brach as a 1st round cover is slower than all corners ( 4.58 ) in the draft , and has a high amount if tackles which could indicate he has targeted a lot when he made all those tackles. How many yard surrender did he give up? Not ideal for an NFL corner but a safety I can see that. There is a lot if talent on Alabama, and they have a great pass rush making it easier to play corner. A fine pick for the 2nd round if you need a hybrid type of corner / safety. I see him as a good safety in the NFL, but watch who you match him against. Hard pass in round one.
The Steelers had a great draft in 2023. However better play calling / coaching is badly needed. Tomlin is 19-18-1 in last 38 games played and hasn't won a playoff game in six years and counting. Nor has hired anyone good to his coaching staff. Think about that. But Khan and Weidl appear to have better management on the salary cap and focused on the right free agents and draft needs.
