    ‘Steeler football, Steeler way’

I’ve seen numerous posters use these terms.
Can someone chime in and define what this means?
How is it possible to have the best owner, best front office, best gm, best HC, good/great drafts every year and good FA acquisitions every year, but only have 3 playoff wins in 13 years?

Thanks…….. but only a couple people commented. The rest spun it to attack a certain person

    I'll bite.

IMO, Steelers Football is to dominate the trenches and play a physical brand of football. Obviously, the league is pass-happy these days, so it doesn't necessarily mean to play like the 1970's and run 75% of the time. You'll have to adjust with the times and pass, but ideally your WR would like to block (see: Hines Ward). But in dominating the trenches, you have more options. If you gain a lead, you can run more often to kill the clock.

If you dominate the trenches defensively, then more times than not, you stuff the run, forcing your opponent to pass. But, that's just what the team wants because they traditionally have dominant pass rushers, which the team has has a history of, from TJ to Harrison to Porter to to Lloyd to Joe Greene & LC Greenwood.

I guess the short answer is: It's a dominant defense with a moderate offense.

To be clear, by moderate, I mean middling. Not a greatest show on turf, but certainly not the Tim Couch Browns, either. I mean an offense that *can* be explosive on a given day (this true dating back to Swann/Stallworth).

Anyway, that's what *I* think when someone says Steelers football.

Spot on 100 percent how I would define it too. Very nice Deville.

In view of the fact that Mike Tomlin has matched Cowhers record I give him the designation:

    TCFCLTC-
The Coach Formerly Considered Less Than Cowher

I appreciate you stepping up and answering.
I think too many fans want to believe we are still the Steelers of the first 4 super bowls.
I see too many refer the ‘steeler way’ as tough, physical, imposing our will, pound the ball, blue collar, intimidating, etc.
We hear it ever year after we draft player ‘X’.
I find it hard to believe that no other team thinks their organization is any different than what we think ours is.
I’m thinking that every organization wants high character, lunch box, loyaly, punch you in the face type players.
I’m also guessing that very few , if any, of our fans can come up with a ‘steeler type’ list before the draft, yet when the draft is over, we got a bunch of them and none of out opponents drafted any.
Maybe it’s just a feel good thing to think your favorite team is any different than the rest.

This is what I think the "Steeler" way is.
Holding your opponents to less then 100 yards rushing per game for the whole season.
Running the ball in the 4th Qtr on every down for a 10 play drive. Eating up 7 minutes and closing out the game.
Running the same run play 5 straight times in the same hole and being successful on every play.
Sacking the opposing teams QB at the end of the game closing out the win.
We had this with Troy P, Deebo, Alan Faneca, and Jerome Bettis and Casey Hampton and Aaron Smith. All that and Big Ben at QB.

Can we get it again, I don't know but there's just something about smashmouth football when your opponents roll over on their backs and say No Mas.
    That's "Steeler" football to me.

I think we started seeing a return to Steeler football once Najee was healthy and the OL was rolling after the bye.

I was at the Panthers game and they mauled that team into submission. The locals all thought they had arrived after being Seattle in Seattle and running it down their throat.

I think we will continue to see that philosophy next season.

Full disclosure, I intentionally avoided "the Steelers way" part of your question, because I don't think it's significantly different than other teams. We pretend that morally, we're better, but the FO has turned a blind eye for the criminals/offenders, just like so many other teams do. Universally, teams are more likely to do this for stars. Even locker room cancers hang around, sometimes longer than they should, *if they are good* (see: Antonio Brown). For that matter, if TJ had reconciled with him, I have no doubts Taylor Lewan would be on this roster.

But, "Steelers football", that I can define. I can define a style of play that has traditionally belonged to this team. From Franco to Barry Foster to Bam Morris to Bettis to Bell to Najee, we like our big, punishing running backs. That's another factor that I left out, above in my post.

Even when Ben was among the passing leaders, a lot of fans complained when the run game struggled. There's an adjustment period when you've been used to something all your life - lol

The Steelers way for me is to win games regardless of the circumstances the team faces. The team won't always be good enough every week. The team should do their best to win games. Defense plays poorly for a half or a quarter ect then offense needs to do it's part (limit mistakes score more ect). Defense needs to do the same. Injuries happen then next man up.
