ILB room still looks rough. Mark Robinson was totally lost in the little action he played last year, Holcomb is coming off of foot surgery in November. Tae Crowder is a 7th round pick whose three year PFF grades are 36, 29, and 29.

Needs to be a draft priority or expect much of the same from the last five years.

Unless there is a run on them, we should be able to get one of the top 3 ILBs in this draft

Today, at this time, what is most needed is a safety and a NT... Adams is not good enough and Kazee is solid but not a starter.
And yes of course we can improve CB and T, but NT and S are glaring needs.

As of this moment (might not be through in FA), yes, we need NT and S, but might not use first 3 picks on them

That's a good picture of the present and what's still needed. The move so far are impressive if the guys pan out.

Key observations

• There are only 2 tackles presently on the team. I wouldn't be shocked by 2 OT additions (draft or FA). Likely first round pick
• There should be an ILB added. Hopefully Campbell or Sanders. Is suspect this to be draft 2A (assuming OT in the 1st)
• Peterson, Wallace and Witherspoon aren't bad as your top 3. They'll be looking in rounds 1-4 if the right guy is there, but won't stress/reach if the right guy isn't there
• Seems NT is needed as well. I suspect this to be either draft 2B or 3 selection (Mazi Smith, Keennu Benton?)
• OLB doesn't have strong depth. If Bud is re-signed, problem solved. If not, I could see one drafted earlier than I thought.
• Are we confident in Leal and Loudermilk for DE depth? Wouldn't be shocked to see another body in the mix (Gervon Dexter?)
• I think a vet middling FA should be signed at WR, moving Austin to WR4
• I love Conner Heyward's flexibility, but I don't love him so much in a 2 TE set as a blocker. Seems like another TE should be added somewhere.

As I make my way through this, I don't see the team going Sanders/Campbell (2a), Smith/Benton (2b) and Gervon Dexter (3), but that would be awesome. Just seems that 3 defensive players in a row is out of character for this team.

The signing of one of the NFL's best safeties should give the Pittsburgh Steelers the nudge they've needed.

PITTSBURGH -- The Detroit Lions sent the Pittsburgh Steelers and the rest of the NFL a very clear and should have already been known message with their signing of C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Go sign the big-name safety.

Through a week of free agency, the Steelers have signed Damontae Kazee back to the roster on a two-year deal. It's the right starting point for this defense. Now, they're trying to decide what's next.

Terrell Edmunds remains on the open market and is likely their top option as the third safety to their mix. The deal there is that Edmunds wants his largest contract, and the Steelers are waiting around to see if he lands one - which he won't.

The safety market is just as bad as it was a year ago, and because of it, Edmunds isn't going to get much more than his $2.5 million deal a year ago.

So, the Steelers wait. But they shouldn't. The Steelers should be taking the message the Lions sent to the NFL and running with it. It may be a little late, and they might have to wait until things get figured out with Kevin Byard, but by no means should Pittsburgh be looking at Edmunds as their only option. They should never have been.

Not with the possibility of upgrading the position without hurting their salary cap space.

Edmunds will get about $4M per year when all said and done. I think 3 years/$12M with $6M guaranteed would be fair
