Jake Haener

This prospect is interesting. He's a bit small, but he shows a live and accurate arm, good release, down the field accuracy, can throw on the run, can be used to run the ball a little. He is no statute in the pocket. But above all else he is very accurate ( 72 % ) deliver strikes on crossing routes giving his man easy to catch well placed balls at all areas of the field. A smart QB who reads defenses well.

During senior bowl week he shined at practices, and won MVP of the game, proving his value. Hmmm... He really proved a lot.

His season stats show 20 TD's and only 3 Ints, playing behind a line that isn't great and probably has zero guys who will be drafted. He played in the 10 games this year, throwing for 300+ yards six times and averaging 8.3 yard per attempt. This is no game manager and I think I will hear his name called in round three or four. If he is there in round four at our pick we should take him.

He's invited to the combine. I really like to see these guys spin it in that setting. Qb's as I've always said are the toughest for me to evaluate.

I really, really hope we don't pick a QB in the 3rd or 4th. We don't need to pass on someone who can contribute for another Dobbs or Mason that adds very little value to the team. Especially if we keep Mitch (like Rooney suggests).

I expect that they will use one of the 7th rounders on a "camp arm" type guy like Oladokun (sp) last year. Maybe that's less of a waste this year because we'll have to replace Mitch at least at the end of next season.

But there are always scrap heap QBs around to pick up for fairly cheap. I think that's what we should be doing for at least the 3rd QB (and the QB4 at camp). I hope we don't waste more mid-round picks on guys who are never going to play...or guys who only play when you know that your season is already over.

With the ball in their hands on every play, they are not that tough to evaluate, but you have to know what to look for.

In college he has shown a better arm, better accuracy, a better understanding if the offense, and a higher QB IQ, than Kenny Pickett. He isn't quite as mobile but he has pocket mobility and the ability to make plays on the run. They say people respond to him. I do not think Pickett is the answer, and the Steelers would be wise to spend a 3rd or 4th round pick on such a QB. Unless I miss my guess he will skyrocket up the internet draft boards.

Third or fourth round at most positions are not starters. In this case I've seen enough to indicate he can be better than Pickett. It's worth the gamble when you don't have a franchise QB. If he does well at the combine / pro day he has shined all you can as a quarterback.

He did show me anything besides being a grade C level game manager who completes a lot of easy passed and lives off the defense producing turnovers. We lead the NFL in getting interceptions.

I get it, he's small. So was Drew Brees and he could pass. We should cut Trubisky and save 8 million on the cap. Draft a qb and pick up a veteran for dirt cheap. That what I would do. Pickett got dinged up a too much and you have to worry about him getting concussions.

As a 3rd no, but I as a 4th? Sure if the team really likes him.

I'm not saying Haener doesn't have some talent because he is an efficient passer, has a good arm and he has some football smarts. I'm afraid he'd be a statue behind our OL. Haener will never be a threat to run and he's very limited in moving around the pocket. He's much too small for a being a pocket passing QB.

It's also hard to evaluate QB talent in the Mountain West because the conference has so many bad defenses and a few of the worst in college football. Although the good news for Haener is I thought Josh Allen sucked each time he played Boise State. I thought he'd be the biggest draft bust. I was 100% wrong about Allen and I could be wrong about Haener too.

My preferred option is for the Steelers to pick up a veteran QB as a backup instead of trying to develop a rookie for the role.
