That's right, THIS year we are STILL paying $4.7 million in dead $ for Tuitt. Still like the way this team runs things? Keep kicking that can down the road. That's just great that we are still paying for him. Way to go.

The Eagles have five times the dead money next year and are in the Super Bowl.

Part of the reason the Rams sucked this year is that they had a massive amount of "unlikely to be earned bonuses" from their SB year that hit their cap this year.
That's part of the game.
Re: Tuitt. Another way you can think about this is that we're rolling about $5M of unused cap space from this year into next year.
So if someone prefers, they can pretend that we took the full cap hit the past season and are rolling over $0. When I learned about this, I got a little less apprehensive about restructures because in a sense we use them to have flexibility and I think we usually roll $5M or more over.
Edited to add: This is semantic, but we aren't "paying" Tuitt anything. The cap hit is from bonuses that were paid in the past that didn't hit the cap because they were spread out over multiple years. We are taking that $4.5M cap hit next season because teams have the option to split the cap hit over two years (pre June 1 = all hit in current year, post June 1 = have in the current year, half in the following year).

If he decided to come back & play, he'd probably be our best D-lineman
The Steelers do a pretty good job at managing the cap, so I'm not going to second guess how they decided to rework Tuitt's deal in a way that was probably pretty good for both sides at the time. Besides, Players careers are usually very short - so I tend to fall on the side of them getting paid as much as possible as quick as possible. The career can end at any moment.
