SIMPLE. WE ARE YOUNG ON OFFENSE. WE HAVE A ROOKIE QB. WE DIDN'T EXECUTE WELL ENOUGH AS A TEAM TO WIN.
Is Canada the guy going forward? I don't know? What I do know is that a coaching success is tied directedly to player performance. What I do know is that Steelers fans called for HOF (Cowher and Lebeau) coaches to be fired.
I look at it like this. How many OCs offenses light the world on fire with rookie QBs? Few and far between.
Some members of this fan base call Troy a bust. GIve it time folks.
And don't you think the coach has a part in the execution? I mean, not all plays are equally easy to execute. e.g. asking Gunner to block a 300 lb DE is a very difficult task. So while you can say 'he didn't execute that block' the coach clearly did him no favors with the assignment. Not all players have all the talents needed for executing all plays well. Some OLs are good at run blocking, some good at pass blocking. A coach that repeatedly calls for runs behind a pass blocking line is a poor playcaller.
The jet sweep is good example. Watch how many guys fail to get to their assigned blocks. Bad execution. But maybe they are not quick enough against these fast LBs crashing down?
And you keep bringing up 'rookie QB'. You do know they have had three QBs trying to run this offense, all with the same result. At some point the finger has to turn to the OC and not everyone else.
So you don't think he can learn from mistakes.
That's not great of its true.
I do think having the transition in speed of playing with the 2nds (the best of the college all starts) before playing with the firsts would have been helpful.
And your post also talked about giving Kenny Mason's snaps. IIRC you specifically called out those of us who wanted Kenny to take Mason's snaps in the 2nd game.
The issues I have are less about performance and more about process.
Canada's offense is consistently reported to be very simple and very easy to prepare for.
And there doesn't seem to be any effort to make changes to improve the offense. This is different than on D, where we get reports from those that watch the all 22 talking about different wrinkles the try most weeks.
Canada seems to be very inflexible. Which would be OK if his offense was good imo.
There isn't any data that suggests his offense is good imo.
And I haven't seen anything that talks about him changing things to try to make it better.
That's bad process imo
He also had Trubisky, Ben, and Mason.
But again, it's not (all) his fault. Tomlin is the one smothering the offense. Tomlin's dream offense is 15-play drives, leading to 17-16 wins...good enough to maybe have a winning record and then get boat-raced in the playoffs.
I said he needed more reps with the one’s.
and while I think you can learn from getting more reps I dont think playing a player UNTIL he throws an INT is anymore teachable then playing a RB or WR until he fumbles or drops a pass.
INT’s will happen in real games regardless of how many reps you get in preseason games.
also, there are more mistakes than INT’s and I’m sure Kenny made some but my focus is reps with the 1’s in preseason AND practice.
Kenny barely had reps with the ones so the timing and chemistry isn’t there yet.
Find my post for me and help me prove I’m Black
BTW, I don't think the team is just losing patience with Canada. I and others joke about Tomlin's simplistic "just beat your man" philosophy of offense after putting them in position to fail, but that's exactly what he told the team Sunday when the photo in this article was taken.
Pay attention to player interviews recently - in their veiled complaints about the play-calling, you'll notice them saying they just have to execute the plays "the coaches give us"...they don't say "Matt".
They know.
