Diontae Johnson isnít fully participating in Steelers training camp

Posted by Josh Alper on July 27, 2022

Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson reported to Steelers training camp this week, but his quest for a new contract appears to be impacting his participation level.

Head coach Mike Tomlin said on Wednesday that Johnson was not a full participant in the first practice of camp and told reporters that it was not his decision to have Johnson do less than other members of the team. Tomlin also said that he didnít see it as a big deal and that he would be devoting his ďenergy and focusĒ to those who are participating.

Johnson also spoke to reporters on Wednesday. He didnít divulge his plans for practice, but said heíd like to get in time with the players competing to be the next quarterback in Pittsburgh before adding that ďcertain circumstances are just part of the business.Ē

ďI want to be here long-term. But thatís up to them,Ē Johnson said, via Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. ďIím just going to keep doing what Iím doing.Ē

Linebacker T.J. Watt took a similar stance on practicing in training camp before landing a new deal just before the start of the 2021 season. Weíll see if the approach works out as well for Johnson this time around.

Let him and his 80 million dollar demands sit. It will give more time to Pickens and Austin III. They are the future.
This year will tell a lot about the direction the Steelers are going in. One good thing is we got what seems like a hot draft class in Pickens, Leal, and Austin. Possibly Robinson.

I'm fine not paying either top dollar. They're complementary guys, not guys defenses have to scheme around. Let's hope Pickens can be that guy.

TJ made this acceptable last year ... now for any player not happy with his contract, you need not practice with the team. Team mentality continues to decline.

I think it's a consequence of the CBA.

Holdouts now carry mandatory fines that cannot be waived later.

So missing mandatory practice days without being excused is very expensive.

And guys across the league now seem to "hold in". This isn't a Steelers issue.
