He crapped the bed last year when they needed him the most.

I’m not saying he is done but from what I have seen he has been a head case since that Foles SB run. One minute he looks legit and the next he is making pee wee QB level decisions with the football.
Tomlinís coming back so what can you do?

He does not possess that "it" factor, and more importantly he does not seem to be a favorite among his teammates. From the outside he doesn't seam like a leader.

QB Carson Wentz could be ideal fit for the Steelers next season

    Curt Popejoy
    February 14, 2022

Every time there is even a hint of a rumor that a veteran quarterback might be available this offseason, you have to wonder if it is something the Pittsburgh Steelers should consider. We admit that in most cases, there really isnít much to get excited about either because of the player or the price.

But this one might be different. The latest quarterback scuttlebutt is that the Indianapolis Colts are looking to trade or release quarterback Carson Wentz prior to March 19. This is when $7 million of his $22 million base salary for 2022 would be guaranteed.

There are two ways to look at this. If the Steelers trade for Wentz, his cost by comparison to even a player like Jimmy Garoppolo would be a bargain. Wentzís contract is big in 2022 but is structured in such a way that the final two seasons offer much more flexibility.

However, there is a real possibility that the Colts wonít get any takers and they simply choose to release him. At that point it just becomes a matter of where Wentz wants to play and where the money is right. Iíd like to think coming to a team with guys like Najee Harris, Diontae Johnson, Chase Claypool and Pat Freiermuth would be of some interest to the former North Dakota State prospect.

The Philadelphia Eagles drafted Wentz No. 2 overall in the 2016 NFL draft. Pittsburgh is working to replace Ben Roethlisberger who retired at the end of the season and while we donít know what direction the Steelers front office will go in, they could do much worse than Wentz.

I’m not interested in giving up anything for a failed first round QB. I wouldn’t mind giving him a look as a FA.
Totally agree. He had more TDs and less INTs than Ben did and had nothing to throw to.

We could offer him more to work with than he had in Indy. He also has the "mobility" that we seem to be looking for. He isn't a super star, but could be be a good starter going forward?

Yes, as long as we don't get saddled with his contract salary.

Steelers Considered Favorite to Land Colts QB Carson Wentz

The Pittsburgh Steelers are among a small number of teams considered a landing spot for the QB.

    NOAH STRACKBEIN 2/17/22

According to CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin, quarterback Carson Wentz and the Indianapolis Colts are headed for a breakup, leaving the door open for the Pittsburgh Steelers to make a move.

Benjamin believes the Colts are interested in another veteran quarterback and could trade Wentz this offseason. In doing so, a team who acquires him would take on his $28 million cap hit. However, Wentz's contract has no guaranteed money past 2022.

The Steelers are now one of four teams listed as favorites for the quarterback, according to Benjamin. Pittsburgh joins the Denver Broncos, Washington Commanders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers as top landing spots.

"While a Rodgers trade would be sweet for both parties, they feel far more likely to go with a soft rebuild at QB as Mike Tomlin wades into post-Ben Roethlisberger waters," Benjamin wrote. "Wentz offers some traits of a younger Ben, and his arrival wouldn't preclude them from drafting a QB. They're also built to play like Wentz's Colts did in 2021, leaning on the run and defense."

Wentz threw for 3,563 yards and 27 touchdowns to seven interceptions in 2021, playing in all 17 games and leading the Colts to a 9-8 record.

However, he threw an interception and lost a fumble in the team's Week 18 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, which kept Indy out of the playoffs while putting the Steelers in the final Wildcard spot.

Good for what? Missing the playoffs? Why bother with that? Mason can do that and for much cheaper. Wentz is not a winner. His fail to beat Jville to make the playoffs says it all, as if his fall from grace in Philly wasn't enough.

    Not sure if this is a good indicator or not given the circumstances but the top 5 QBs in 4th qtr passer rating were;

    1. Stafford
    2. Allen
    3. Mahomes
    4. Roethlisberger
    5. Hurts

Wentz? 15th in the NFL at 89.3. But he did pick up his game in the last month of the season with a rating of 103.8 which edged out Herbert and Carr.
