Is it me or is this whole "ONCE THEY HAVE TO PAY THEM WE WILL HAVE THEM RIGHT WHERE WE WANT THEM" mentality just wrong?

I don't want to wait until that happens. We have to figure it out now. Not saying we need to go out and break the bank on a QB but we really need to draft some horses and fill our roster with some studs.
I lost a bet about Najee gaining 1300 yards.

"Our head coach has failed to win a playoff game for seven years in a row. His game day strategy, culture of divas, in game decisions, clock management, player evaluation, hires, and affinity with sub par starters at RB, P, and OL are holding the Steelers back. That standard remains the standard"

Hey if they lose Ingraham, perhaps the Steelers resign him and then trade him next season for a 5th rounder the next time around...

it's a genius strategy, worked like clockwork this season.

Where teams with expensive QBs will get hit the most is quality depth on the bench. With a 17 game season just about every team's roster will get tested during the season. And if a team is lucky enough to have good depth on the practice squad it will get pilfered at some point. Unfortunately for the Steelers the injuries hit the weakest part of the team and with weak depth. You could argue they shouldn't have won 9 games. Teams with strong personnel depts and coaching will weather the best. So, if you have cap money and make wise choices you can build a playoff capable team.

I was looking at the Rams cap and they have something like 40% of their cap tied up in the top 10 players. That seems very top heavy. We'll see if it brings a SB ring.

The problem gets compounded with weakness. In the 2nd half, KC couldn’t figure anything out once Cincy started dropping 8 into coverage.

Just don’t blitz Mahommes and play sound D on the backend.

With more money tied into Mahommes it gets harder to add talent to overcome that deficiency and they really won’t be supporting making Pat better.

The league will look at how they lost and adapt and team with smaller QB contracts will add players to beat KC.

    It’s a constant cycle.

I'm not buying that a high cap-hit QB dooms the team. Sure it makes it more difficult to put pieces around and have quality depth. But that's why teams have cap-ologists. There's no more important position on the field. Ben, Peyton, Eli, Warner, Wilson and now Stafford (and of course the GOAT) have all gotten to the show on non-rookie contracts.

Again Matt Ryan got to the Super Bowl while on one of those big contracts.

Looks like KC can get Mahomes' cap hit down to ~$14MM for 2022 if they convert his roster bonus into signing bonus.

Here's what it looks like if they restructure only his roster bonus every year through 2027

Yes, there are a few who got there and lost. Peyton Manning's cap hit in 2009 was ~17% of the cap. Matt Ryan's when he went was 15%. It's still rare.

You can for sure get creative with the cap and keep the window open.
