Steelers reportedly name Mike Sullivan their quarterbacks coach

Steelers reportedly name Mike Sullivan their quarterbacks coach

Sullivan previously worked with the Giants, Buccaneers, Broncos, and Jaguars

    By Michael_Beck@MichaelBeck56 Feb 4, 2021

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo has reported the Pittsburgh Steelers have named Mike Sullivan its quarterbacks coach. The move comes on the heels of Matt Canada being promoted to offensive coordinator. Sullivan will now be tasked with guiding the Steelers through Ben Roethlisberger’s final season[s] while grooming the likes of Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins.

After graduating from West Point in 1989, Sullivan joined the 25th Infantry Division of the United States military. Upon completing his service he would begin his coaching career at Humboldt State university before returning to West Point. Where he would have multiple coaching stints before making the jump to the pros.

Sullivan began his NFL coaching career in 2002 after making the jump from the college ranks where he had spent his entire career on the defensive side of the ball. The Jacksonville Jaguars defensive quality control coordinator in 2002, Sullivan switched to the other side of the line of scrimmage in 2003 as an offensive assistant. Sullivan spent six years as the New York Giants wide receivers coach before switching to quarterbacks coach for two seasons in 2010 and 2011.

After two Super Bowls with the Giants, Sullivan was hired as the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for two seasons before returning to New York as the quarterbacks coach in 2015. Sullivan was promoted to the offensive coordinator for the Giants for the 2016 and 2017 seasons before heading to Denver as their quarterbacks coach in 2018.

Sullivan spent last season as an administrator for Army, his alma mater, where he was director of recruiting. The 54 year old coach is a two time Super Bowl winner and a one time NCAA FCS National Champion.

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has also confirmed the report.

    Incredible hire.
He will have ben running the rpo like a champion in no time.
    A true steeler type guy.
    BQbCA......
    Update:
In the last decade, 25% of the league has won a super bowl(the Steelers aren't one of them) and now 50% have as many or more playoff wins as the Steelers.

They aren't happy unless they are unhappy. Complain about hiring internally and not happy with an external hire.

Might not hurt to have someone from outside the system giving input to how we run our offense

    I agree. Fresh eyes.
From the 2010-2020 season, (A 10 year period that the majority of Cowher's players & coaches had left) Mike Tomlin has only won 3 playoff games. And two of those wins were against back up Quarterbacks.

Dolphin fans in the 90’s held on to Don Shula for too long for what he did in the playoffs in the 70’s...
Are the same as Steeler fans (of 2020 ) holding on to Tomlin for too long for what he did in 2008, with Cowher's players & coaches.
