Art Rooney Says Mike Tomlin Is The Steelers’ Coach Of The Future

    Posted on January 28, 2021

Despite a bitter loss in the 2020 playoffs, Pittsburgh Steelers’ team president Art Rooney II appears unwavering in his support of Mike Tomlin. Speaking with beat reporters Thursday, Rooney said Tomlin, whose contract runs through 2022, is the team’s coach of the future.

Here are Rooney’s comments via this tweet from ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.

“Comfortable in saying he’ll be our coach of the future,” Rooney said. “In terms of the job he did, we didn’t finish the way we like.”

Despite an 11-0 start, the Steelers faded down the stretch, going 1-4, the first team to ever win their first 11 games and finish with four regular season losses. It ended in being bounced in the first round of the playoffs, an ugly upset loss to the Cleveland Browns. The offense turned the ball over five times and the defense failed to get a stop in the second half as the offense rallied back.

As we wrote immediately following the loss, it marked the end of a disappointing decade. Since their last Super Bowl appearance, the Steelers have made the playoffs just six times, winning three playoff games, failing to return to the Big Game, and only making one AFC Title appearance. That was in 2016 when they got blown out by the New England Patriots. Pittsburgh’s been one of the league’s most talented teams but have little to show for it. 2020 was supposed to be the team’s last best chance to make a serious Super Bowl run and they fell well short of that goal.

Still, the Rooney’s and Steelers are models of stability so it’s no surprise to hear Rooney publicly support Tomlin. In a time where the organization is about to usher in a new era, one without the likes of Ben Roethlisberger, Maurkice Pouncey, and GM Kevin Colbert (all potentially/likely gone after 2021), it’s unlikely the team will be quick to move on from Tomlin. Whether that’s the right idea is up for debate.

He's going to be 75 years old the next time the Steelers win a playoff game. Is 7 more years too long to wait? Wake up Mr. Rooney. Once Ben retires it's OVER for a while. All you going to see is Tomlin's mediocrity. Get a better head coach in 2022.

They'll NEVER fire Tomlin. They could go 0-16 for the next 5 years and Tomlin will be safe.

I now long for the good ole days of when we had a head coach whose legacy was losing AFC Championship Games. Now we have a head coach whose legacy will be about how he consistently lost to inferior opponents every season.

1st. I think Rooney is being honest here, but let's wait until Tomlin's contract gets extended to come to any conclusions.

It will be interesting to see Tomlin coach a younger team IMO.

I think it will also be interesting to see him decoupled from Ben.

My guess is that it will be much easier to enforce a culture / norms without a big time QB. Part of the Brady magic is that he seems to be the one enforcing norms.

But it's mostly talent that wins and loses games IMO. So his record will likely take a dive.

Although QBs have been more available than ever in the last 2 years.

I wonder if there will be a correction in QB salaries (or at least contract structures) moving forward. If so, I hope it comes after QBs in our division get signed.

I’m anxious to see if this is true.

Back when Ben was suspended 4 games people predicted we would go 0-4. We went 3-1 and almost beat Baltimore in Baltimore with Dennis Dixon ( I think).

2019 when Ben when down some said we wouldn’t win more than 3 or 4 games.

I think people really underestimate how competitive we will be when we don’t have to put 13% of our cap towards the QB position.
Tomlin’s coming back so what can you do?

Rooney Jr. has turned out to be a man with no innovation of his own; just a guy who’s trying to copy his daddy but his daddy was a better owner .. a man who’d adopt to the times. These current ways are not building a championship winning team. And if Dan senior were alive in his prime right now, he’d update his philosophies , get with the times and Tomlin would be fired.
From the 2010-2020 season, (A 10 year period that the majority of Cowher's players & coaches had left) Mike Tomlin has only won 3 playoff games. And two of those wins were against back up Quarterbacks.

Dolphin fans in the 90’s who wanted to hold on to Don Shula for what he did in the playoffs in the 70’s...
Are the same as Steeler fans (of 2020 ) holding on to Tomlin for what he did in 2008, with Cowher's players & coaches

you do realize we've only had 3 head coaches in 50+ years right and that Dan Sr. was a part of that?
