    Colbert to the Lions...maybe

Lions reportedly 'close' to poaching GM Kevin Colbert from Steelers

By Stoney and Jansen with Heather

The Lions could be nearing a blockbuster hire at general manager.

According to Mike Stone of 97.1 The Ticket, the team has made an offer to longtime Steelers GM Kevin Colbert -- and Colbert is 'close' to accepting. It's now on Steelers ownership to make a counteroffer to prevent Colbert from leaving.

ďI just got off the phone with a trusted source who has told me that the Lions have made an offer to Kevin Colbert, and itís pretty close to happening,Ē Stone said Wednesday morning on the Stoney & Jansen Show. ďIím not going to say itís done or anything like that. Someone I know pretty well, somewhat connected, said that theyíve offered the job to Kevin Colbert, and unless the Rooney's come up with some kind of crazy counteroffer he might be coming back.

"Iím not confident enough to say itís done or to say breaking news, but a source has told me that the Lions have offered the gig to Kevin Colbert, and itís close."

But don't get too excited. According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers have not received a request from the Lions to speak with Colbert -- and the Lions can't do so until that request is made and granted.

Colbert, obviously, would be a home run hire for Detroit. He was director of pro scouting for the Lions from 1990-99, during which time they made six playoff appearances. He left to join the Steelers in 2000 and has been GM since 2010. Pittsburgh has 10 division titles, three Super Bowl appearances and two Super Bowl titles during Colbert's time in the organization.

Stone's report jibes with another from Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, who reported last Sunday that the Lions were preparing to make a 'significant offer' to Colbert. His contract with the Steelers expires next month:

He has long been (Detroit's) dream hire, and his contract with Pittsburgh is expiring. Those who know him best doubt he ever considers leaving the Steelers -- and he has been going year-to-year with his deals with the club at his own request -- but the Lions have been working for this for weeks behind the scenes and would love to be able to lure him away.

Stone reiterated later in Wednesday's show that the Lions have made their move, and now it's up to the Steelers and Colbert to respond.

"Sources told me twice that the Detroit Lions -- a trusted source -- have offered Kevin Colbert, the head honcho of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the opportunity to come back home and be in charge of everything of the Detroit Lions. The ball is in Kevin Colbertís court," Stone said. "Nothing is done, nothing has been decided. But they have, according to the source, offered him the job.

I remembered last season when Colbert re-signed with the Steelers. I just checked the terms and he is signed through the 2021 draft. This a good move by Rooney to keep him here for at least the draft before he can go elsewhere.

Steelers Extend Kevin Colbert’s Contract through the 2021 NFL DraftPosted on February 6, 2020 by KT Standard
With Super Bowl LIV in the books, the 2020 off season is a foot, and the Pittsburgh Steelers wasted little time in getting their 2nd biggest off season question answered when they extended Vice President and General Manager Kevin Colbert’s contract through the 2021 NFL Draft.

Traditionally the Steelers have announced contract extension for front office staff shortly before training camp. Last season the Steelers extended Mike Tomlin’s contract but they did not extend Kevin Colbert’s contract as Art Rooney II announced that Colbert prefers to renew on a year-by-year basis.

While most observers expected Kevin Colbert to return to the Steelers, there have been rumors that he could bolt to the Carolina Panthers, whose owner David Tepper was a former Steelers minority owner.

All of that talk is for naught, as Kevin Colbert is staying put in Pittsburgh.

And would Colbert need to approve it for Detroit to be sanctioned for tampering?

Seems like classic slow news day so make up a report from an "anonymous source".

The best thing about this is that other "news" organizations can then write stories about how "there are reports that" or "we've heard chatter about". Then a new (or the original) news source says "multiple outlets reporting that"...

It's just a huge cycle of BS in many cases.

As a Leafs fan, we get this ALL THE TIME whenever big name UFAs come onto the market. There are ALWAYS rumors about them signing with the Leafs. Probably because (1) it's good for the "news" outlets to have rumors about a team with a large fan base, and (2) it's good for the player because the Leafs have deep pockets and can do things with contracts that other teams can't do. Then they have some amount of leverage if other teams think their big signing is about to get poached by the Leafs. This works less well now because the Leafs were also pretty tight against the cap this year.

IMO Colbert is staying. Even the Lions are not this dumb to tamper if not given permission.

Maybe close to signing "return to sender" on the envelope?

fake news I guess...guy that broke the story recants:

Obviously my information has been debunked. This does not mean there isnít or wasnít back channel things going on. This is a reputable football person, not a limo driver, lawyer or chef. It appears he is wrong and that is on me.

This "offer sent" story must be fake. As he is still currently under contract until the end of the season that is tampering. If the story was that they spoke on the phone and innuendos were made then sure....but Fedexing an actual offer? No chance.
