    Because he's a Virginia/Maryland guy

    Tomlin's hometown heros.

He's enamored with inferior players from that area that couldnt hack it in the SEC or other dominant programs like Clemson, OSU, Michigan, etc.
Tomlin: Let's unleash hell and "mop the floor" with the competition.

I hope that the worst thing we can say about this draft is that we missed on a 6th round pick because we went with a guy we though we knew more about than the rest of the league based on connections in the FO.

I also think late round draft strategy is interesting.

Is it better to go for guys from big programs in great conferences that don't really stick out, or to go for guys that lead their teams from weaker conferences?

It's probably also worth remembering that the most important player on our team (and the best player in the franchise since the 70s and maybe ever) "couldn't hack it in the SEC or other dominant programs".

Agree NB. It's the age old argument about Harvard vs Brown.
Yea, Harvard opens more doors but that doesn't define future success.
I think it's more about the culture the Steelers try to cultivate. I am guessing a small school prospect has a more humble approach about himself.

You know the circumstances of our connection with the University of Maryland.
From the 2010-2019 season, (A 9 year period that the majority of Cowher's players & coaches had left) Mike Tomlin has only won 3 playoff games. And two of those wins were against back up Quarterbacks.

Dolphin fans in the 90ís who wanted to hold on to Don Shula for what he did in the playoffs in the 70ís...
Are the same as Steeler fans (of 2020 ) holding on to Tomlin for what he did in 2008, with Cowher's players & coaches

Yeah seems to have a similar set of pros/con.

I mean, you read the scouting report for Allen coming out of college, and it sounds almost exactly like what I've read about Brooks. Good vs. the run, good hitter/tackler, especially good in the box, not good in coverage, kind of a tweener, we expect he'll help us on STs.

I think it was Colbert who said of Brooks, "He's 1/2 a safety and 1/2 a linebacker." I hope that doesn't mean he's only half good enough to be playing at either of those positions. Because we already have that on the roster.

They are obsessed with hybrid S/LBs. It's like a crack pipe to them and they can't stop hitting it, even though it's never working out.

Wait. So now it’s an obsession with Maryland AND VA? How many players have we drafted from those 2 states the last 10 years?
Tomlinís coming back so what can you do?

I think these type of hybrid players are important in today's NFL.

I'm fine if we keep taking late round flyers on these types of players, hoping that one eventually hits.

I think that's what late round picks are for.
