Report: Steelers Will Hire South Carolina’s Bryan McClendon As New WR Coach

The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to name Bryan McClendon as the team’s new wide receivers coach, according to Mike Gillespie, Sports Director at the ABC affiliate in Columbia, SC.

McClendon, who played his college football at Georgia, has been on the South Carolina staff since December 23, 2015. In his first two seasons, he served as the co-offensive coordinator and tutored the Gamecocks’ wide receiving corps. He was put in charge of the offense and called the plays for the 2018 Outback Bowl and, in early January 2018, was named the full-time offensive coordinator, according to the school’s bio page.

McClendon was also the running backs coach at Georgia at 26 years old and the run game coordinator at age 31. He coached running backs Isaiah Crowell, Todd Gurley, Nick Chubb, Sony Michel while at Georgia.

After his college playing career at Georgia was over with, McClendon signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent in 2006. He was only with them for that one summer, however, as he failed to make the final 53-man roster.

McClendon will take over for Steelers interim wide receivers coach Ray Sherman, who held that position throughout the 2019 season after wide receivers after coach Darryl Drake passed away suddenly while at the team’s training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe last summer. Drake was the receivers coach with the Bears when McClendon was there.

Good hire. Young guy who should be able to help our WRs AND our running game, too. Maybe take over for Fichtner as OC in a year or two?

Steelers are positioning themselves with options once Roethlisberger retires and Fichnter is let go.

    Canada, now McClendon

He was promoted to OC for the 2018 season but then got demoted back to WR coach for 2019. Wonder what happened. Maybe the 7-6 record.

    I hope so.
From the 2010-2019 season, (A 9 year period that the majority of Cowher's players & coaches had left) Mike Tomlin has only won 3 playoff games. And two of those wins were against back up Quarterbacks.

WE WILL NOT WIN ANOTHER SUPER BOWL WITH MIKE TOMLIN AS OUR HEAD COACH. So why delay the inevitable?

Dolphin fans in the 90’s who wanted to hold on to Don Shula for what he did in the 70’s...

Are the same as Steeler fans (of 2020 ) holding on to Tomlin for what he did in 2008.

I like what the Steelers have done with this hire as well as Canada. Both guys have offensive experience beyond coaching the position they are hired to coach and can hopefully contribute to the overall offensive game planning. And bringing in 2 guys with OC experience has to send a bit of a message to Fichtner...

Interesting. Just saw in the link below that it's not a done deal. Cotchery is in the mix, too.

I'd like to see the Steelers hire both. Bring in Cotchery as the WR coach and bring in McClendon as a general offensive assistant of some sort. Given his experience with both WRs and RBs (and our RBs didn't exactly light the world on fire last year, either) this is a guy who could be a big help.

Yeah. Saw this on another site. Maybe someone jumped the gun on this one.
