I think we should have kept him if all we could have gotten out of him was the equivalent of a 2nd round pick. I also think he would be less of a **** show with us if we squashed his tantrum over the summer (and Tomlin and company have shown they could manage AB at a reasonable level for the most part).

I also think that we needed to be all in on not screwing up our cap situation at the end of Ben's career.

But, this is all from the outside and I don't really know how bad he was in the locker room.

I mostly think AB's helmet stuff is a diversion from his feet, but his recent antics make me think that the trade (while still a net negative) wasn't as bad as I originally thought.
Oh no...No way! Great player but lockeroom cancer that had fun it's course here...Insert Raiders here as Chestio continues his downward spiral

Not enough granite in all of South Dakota, eh?
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

AB has far too big an ego for that to have ever been ironed out. He wore out his welcome.

I'm very thankful he's gone. We are better without that cancer on the team, even if that cancer is an incredibly talented athlete with HOF credentials.
We are better without him; addition by subtraction.

The team's focus now is totally on functioning as one unit now. Which makes the team better as a whole.
From the 2010-2018 season, (An 8 year period that the majority of Cowher's players & coaches had left) Mike Tomlin has only won 3 playoff games. And two of those wins were against back up Quarterbacks. Our history has been defined by what we do in the postseason; not the regular season.

My official proclamation: WE WILL NOT WIN ANOTHER SUPER BOWL WITH MIKE TOMLIN AS OUR HEAD COACH. SO WHY DELAY THE INEVITABLE?

    FIRE MIKE TOMLIN

I sure wouldn't. Also consider that the extra draft ammo that Colbert got in the AB trade made him feel more willing to step outside his comfort zone and trade up to draft Devin Bush in the top 10. If we still had AB, we might not have Bush.

Sure, AB's got all the talent in the world, but I think our TEAM is better today with him and his frozen feet and old leather helmet in Napa Valley.
I would probably make that trade because I think Brown is so much better than Johnson and Gentry probably won't end up being much. Plus, Brown is already taking up > 10% of our salary cap this year and I'd rather have him playing to do that. I don't know for sure, but I'd imagine that Brown (with frozen feet and unsafe helmet) will outperform Johnson and Gentry this year and as long as his contract with the Steelers was.

I think that trading for them now isn't the same as denying Brown's tantrum laden trade request. I think the fact that he "won" his dispute with the Steelers is probably part of the reason he's acting out again now. He's been shown that it works.

I think that the trade to Bush still happens because of Colbert's comments on not doing enough to replace Shazier the year before. They know that not having impact players on D killed us last year (where we actually had good yards / game stats, but virtually no turnovers).

You asked about the hypothetical with Bush, but let's think about other hypotheticals too. The $20M cap hit for a guy who isn't playing on your team is the big reason why the trade is a loss IMO. Having AB playing (for about the same cap hit) means that we wouldn't have had to sign Montcrief (2 years $9M). Maybe we combine Montcrief's cap hit with Barron's (2 years $12M). Would that have let us sign a bigger name at ILB to push Vance off the field? Or maybe a better CB than Nelson? Or maybe even a couple of other minor pieces (back up TE / S / etc)?

The cap hit makes up play this season with one hand behind out backs. And it's in a year where we were supposed to have more cap room than other teams because of the Bell holdout.

Ultimately, I don't know. We'll see after this year. As an arm chair GM, I would have taken the rumored Bills deal but not the Oakland deal. But if I actually had to make the decisions...I don't know.

We'll see. I think we'll do better than last year because I think we won't have terrible luck re: kicking & turnovers (I expect officiating to still suck).

But, I don't think we'll do better using so much cap space for AB to play for the Raiders than we would have using the same space for him to play here.
