Steelers sign former Robert Morris DB Marcelis Branch

Updated Jan 17, 12:05 PM; Posted Jan 17, 12:05 PM

    By Jacob Klinger

PITTSBURGH — Marcelis Branch will be playing his football in Greater Pittsburgh again.

The former Robert Morris safety was announced as a reserve-futures signing by the Steelers on Thursday. He entered the NFL in 2017 as an undrafted rookie free agent, signing with the Atlanta Falcons.

He’s spent both of his NFL training camps since with Atlanta. In 2017 he was signed back to the Falcons' practice squad.

Branch joins a group of Steelers safeties that includes Sean Davis, Terrell Edmunds, Morgan Burnett and Marcus Allen. Jordan Dangerfield can be signed back effectively automatically with a veteran minimum offer.

Steelers add two players to offseason roster

Posted by Josh Alper on February 8, 2019, 12:46 PM EST

The Steelers announced a pair of additions to their 90-man offseason roster on Friday.

Linebacker Robert Spillane and running back Malik Williams are the new faces in Pittsburgh. Both players entered the league as undrafted free agents last year.

Spillane signed with the Titans and appeared in two games during the regular season before being waived in late October. He played on 20 special teams snaps and had 25 tackles, a sack and an interception for Tennessee in the preseason. Spillane had 312 tackles, 32.5 tackles for loss and 10 sacks at Western Michigan.

Williams signed with the Falcons and ran 18 times for 55 yards and a touchdown in the preseason. He was waived/injured with a shoulder injury as the team dropped to 53 players in September.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are listed as one of four NFL affiliate teams for the Birmingham Iron of the Alliance of American Football. The Steelers believe in searching for talent at all levels of football, so it's no surprise they would support the AAF.

What exactly is the AAF? There are lots of former NFLers, games broadcast on NFLN, former NFL players in the booth. Is the league affiliated with this one? A farm system at the pro level would be great.
