These are protests against police violence, mainly against young black men, not against the National Anthem.
And they are not a new thing. Read in the article - Jackie Robinson could never bring himself to sing it, for similar reasons. And like the article said, it goes way back over 100 years to the times of lynching.
IMO, calling them "Anthem Protests" is misleading, and has the effect of stifling the debate about race and violence this country desperately needs to work through.
