Washington seems like he's really trying to pay attention to detail and get the little things right. This guy could have a big impact for us. Him coming up the seam and freezing those safeties or coming up the seam with the safeties being too preoccupied with AB and JuJu..either way, he could really do some damage.

he is going to be Sammie Coates with hands IMO. A real problem for defenses over the top.
I lost a bet about Najee gaining 1300 yards.

"Our head coach has failed to win a playoff game for seven years in a row. His game day strategy, culture of divas, in game decisions, clock management, player evaluation, hires, and affinity with sub par starters at RB, P, and OL are holding the Steelers back. That standard remains the standard"

His ability to win contested catches is the difference there.

While he is certainly not the size/speed freak coming off the bus that scares the bejesus out of opposing DB's like Martavis Bryant was, he seems to have this uncanny saavy to beat opposing corners deep anyway.

When you see this guy with a running back's body running a 40 in the mid-4.5's, you don't think he's as much of a threat...until he gets by you anyway.

Very interesting specimen should be equally adept for us taking the top off a defense or as a possession receiver, either in the slot or outside.

He may also give us a reasonably solid kick return option as well.

He should have the most immediate impact for us among this season's rookies for sure.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

I would think so. Really want to see him in the pre-season. I really want to see just how fast he is or isn't.

his push off is spectacular. Will be interesting to see if he gets called for it early on.

The Steelers have a new “Combat Catch” receiver, and his name is James Washington

The Pittsburgh Steelers love players who can make catches in high traffic areas. James Washington is certainly one of those players.

A few years ago the Pittsburgh Steelers had a receiver who was dubbed “Combat Catch Cobi” by Jim Wexell of SteelCityInsider. That receiver was Cobi Hamilton, and he was given this nickname for his ability to make tough catches in high traffic areas.

If the ball was in Hamilton’s vicinity, even with defenders draped on him, there was a good chance he was coming down with the football.

While Hamilton has moved on from the Steelers and bounced around the NFL, the team has a new “Combat Catch” player, and it is rookie wide receiver James Washington.

Although the “Combat Catch” nickname doesn’t rhyme with James like it does with the name Cobi, Washington’s statistics in college certainly show he isn’t afraid of contested catches. In fact, according to Pro Football Focus (PFF), he led the NCAA in passer rating when facing contested catches.

Some scoff at anything PFF related, and this is understandable on many levels, but what this shows me is Washington is anything but a “one trick pony”, as Mike Tomlin likes to say. Washington was one of the best deep threats in college football in 2017, but don’t let that fool you into thinking he can’t do other things.

Think back to when the Steelers drafted Mike Wallace out of Ole Miss. Tomlin gave him the “one trick pony” nickname because he struggled to do anything but go routes. Wallace had blazing speed, something Washington doesn’t, as his 4.54 second 40-yard dash indicated at the NFL Scouting Combine, but what he lacks in speed he makes up for in play making ability.

In other words, Washington is a more complete receiver coming out of college. Just another reason to be excited about what Washington brings to the Steelers, even in his rookie season.

He's available again. The Cardinals released him over the weekend to sign former Cleveland 2nd round pick WR Greg Little instead.

James Washington a 'workhorse' for Steelers and family farm

    8:00 AM ET

    Jeremy Fowler
    ESPN Staff Writer

PITTSBURGH -- James Washington has an exercise for developing strong receiving hands that even Antonio Brown doesn't try on social media: changing the tires on a 6E Series John Deere tractor.

Years of handling that clunky jack underneath multi-ton farm machinery always got Washington right for game days.

"It teaches you to hold leverage, put your shoulder into it and shove it," said Washington, the Pittsburgh Steelers' second-round pick. "Flip the tire up and lean it against the tractor, then you kind of want to wiggle it on there."

Before Washington learned to do it all on the field for Oklahoma State, he had to do it all in the fields of north Texas.

As a teenager in Stamford, Texas, with a population of less than 3,000, Washington spent countless hours helping his father on farms, one of which is family-owned in nearby Lexington.

Washington's dad would return from his day job at TxDot highway patrol, change clothes, put his boots on and hop into an old diesel truck with his son.

Farming isn't a convenient storyline for the Steelers' rookie wide receiver, but it is a way of life.

"My dad's a one-man job, so when he's out plowing and stuff, I'm usually in the barn cleaning up, changing tires on the tractors, air conditioning belts on tractors, changing the oil," said Washington, whose family farms count wheat and cotton as its primary resources. "I'm just kind of like the workhorse. If anything needs to be heavy lifted or anything needs worked on then I'm the guy."

From love for the family dog, a blue heeler named Cowboy, to appreciating the wheat-planting process, Washington quickly took to the farming life as a child.

The family figured putting him to work would build character.

"He likes to be outside in the wide open," said Washington's mother, Chrysta. "He fell in love with it. We always said one day, if this is something you're looking at, we'll do some serious farming."

Washington majored in agricultural farming at Oklahoma State, where he set a school record of 4,472 receiving yards. He credits farming strength for his ability to make contested catches. Despite his 5-foot-11, 213-pound frame, Washington has long legs and high hips, which, according to Cowboys offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich, helps him play like he's 6-3.

The Steelers are known for their track record drafting receivers, and their latest project isn't lacking in blue-collar pedigree, even if big-city living might be an adjustment.

Washington's idea of a good time this summer is restoring a 1986 Chevy C10 wide bed and cruising through local parking lots.

"When you drive to Walmart and someone sees you, they say, 'Hey, nice truck' -- it makes you feel good because you put in all the hard work to get that," Washington said.

Pittsburgh has plenty of Walmarts and footballs to go around in the Steelers' offense. Washington figures to be a deep threat alongside Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster.

He'll approach that job like an afternoon session back home.

"He's more gracious due to the fact that he knows where food sources come from and he understands hard work," Chrysta said.
