The more they go crazy away from the Black and Gold, the more Tomlin looks like Phil Jackson IMO.
They were in their prime and Tomlin allowed them to act like this.
    Other coaches held them accountable.
    Update:
In the last decade, 25% of the league has won a super bowl(the Steelers aren't one of them) and now 50% have as many or more playoff wins as the Steelers.

And you see how quickly they blew up, right?

This is an argument for Tomlin's handling of them, not against them.

For better or worse, this is what HCs have to do with star players. Find ways to get them to work in the system when the star players are far more valuable to the team than the HC. My wife used to work in management for a Fortune 50 company. The role she disliked most was what they called an "influencing" role. Something like environmental control of a production facility. In that role, the manager has to get people from other departments to do stuff for her without having any real control over the scope of work for that employee.

Would the team really had been better off if he benched AB or Bell in their prime and they then demanded a trade mid-season?

It's not the 50s anymore. Coaches can't be iron willed strong men and be successful. Even Billy B might not be able to hold it together without having buy in from the GOAT in the lockeroom.

Good article about how Bell ruined his career:

Tomlin didn't allow grown men to do anything. What Tomlin did was work with grown men to maximize their potential. The team benefited from Bell and Brown. Brown and Bell had opportunities to make a lot of money. Unfortunately they couldn't make it work. Sometimes that's life. Everyone moved on.

I am sure Tomlin offered those individuals advice off the field. At the end of the day individuals are accountable for their own mistakes and actions.

started before their prime. as ryan clak has stated, AB's showed signs of that early on.

At some point it's up to the individual to seek help or correct behavior. We are talking about a grown individual.

I believe Brown has a mental illness. Brown is definitely a head case. Is it bipolar or something else?

...unless you can blame Tomlin. At that point, it's 100% on Tomlin.
