    Training Camp 7/30

Today players that didn't dress C Allen ,Mitchell,Spaeth and Harrison.
Jordan Sullen on the field today wearing 42.
Our 1st team OL you know second team today was AV,Hubbard,Dismukes,Dieffenbach n Van Dyk.
Some early drills on punt returns had Archer, Wheaton and Rogers all leading the way on punt returns. These 3 all look smooth in their positioning and good "fundies" V technique elbows in on catching punts. Preseason games with defenders closing in will be better evaluation then camp reps.
Some tight end sled drills showed Egnew lacks explosion and Clear doesn't use his hands well in striking a rising blow. Clear had a early drop in drills today. Tight ends as a group today played rather well with Heath looking very sharp.
    Goal line live:
Bell scores on dive over left guard. Again all goal line formations were 3 wide.
Ben just misses Johnson on a fade.
Shazier takes down Williams for 3 yd loss. 50 is playing fast very fast.
Fogg breaks up pass on a slant.
Coates runs a fade and Jones just slightly overthrows him. Coates laid out for pass brings roar from the fans.
Archer uses that speed on a quick out for the short td. He continues to show good hands.

Back on Backers ( pass coverage):
Timmons on Bell head to head 4 times. Bell takes it 3-1 as he looks like a wr and though 94 is in his hip pocket Bell is a beast to cover.
Archer vs. Shazier... DA runs an out and again shows excellent hands and though 50 in good position 13 has the quicks.
Williams catches a drag against V Williams. VW doesn't have the burst to undercut the route.
Garvin knocks down a pass intended for Scheuerman. Garvins long arms a plus in coverage.
Timmons tips pass away from Archer. Timmons has good "fundies" in coverage.
Zumwalt tips a pass away from Stingily.
Scheuerman beats Garvin on an out. This happens twice. Garvin a little tall in pass coverage and backs getting a step on him.
    Spence blankets 34 on a 9 route.
Archer gets half step on Shazier on an out. Good coverage but DA having a solid day.
Stingily smokes Zumwalt as did RS. Zumwalt also to tall in coverage and not able to run with our backs to undercut route.
Zumwalt tried to jam Williams missed and got burnt badly. His coverage skills hurting him today.
V Williams covers Stingily on a wheel. Excellent tech by Williams.

    11 on 11:
Golden and Thomas open with the 1's at safety.
D Williams cuts inside run back but Thomas in on the stick. Thomas show good burst to the ball.
Heyward sealed an inside run for no gain.
End around by Coats blown up by Jarvis with Shazier cleaning up for apx 5 yd loss. Excellent play by 95.
Moats crashes down on rb for no gain. He had a solid day today.
Rookie Walton and V Williams shut down a 6 hole run for minimal gain.
McCullers and Geathers close down a gut run for no gain. McCullers is difficult for one blocker to handle.
Holliman in single high coverage. We are almost exclusively in 3 wide sets.
Jones rolls out after Cam Thomas gives up contain by crashing hard inside ....Jones pass falls incomplete.
Wild in at safety and makes tackle in backfield against a draw play. Quick read and solid stick.
Chickilo makes a tackle for loss on a counter run. Makes another play in the backfield from left olb position. He continues to impress. More on that later.
Only one poor snap from gun by Dismukes today.

Another set of 11 on 11:
Wheaton on an out nice grab hit by Thomas. Wheaton playing with good quicks.
Jones tries to toss another out but misses as Heyward gets quick pressure on LJ.
Jones hits Heath in stride on a slant.
Jones incomplete to Bryant on a go Webb with good coverage.
Dupree uses spin move to get inside pressure. Move isn't the best but at least he is switching it up. He has quicks.
Jones pressured but keeps eyes downfield and steps up in pocket avoids rush and complete to Heath.
Jones complete to Bryant on deep in. Nice diving grab by Bryant who had Blake on him with good coverage. Crowd liked this play.
Jones under pressure misses high to DHB on a dig.
Jones complete to Gardner with Chickilo on a late stick showing good hustle.
Palmer rides Dupree wide behind pocket. Dupree quick off snap but needs to flip hips harder and use hands better to tighten it up to not get ridden wide. Single arm pull down technique needed here by Dupree. Houston on KC a master of that move.
Murphy complete to Rogers on an out. Murphy has a pro arm and Rogers is just a smooth looking receiver.
Murphy drops back but H Jones off the edge at right olb bats ball free. Jones has that burst and got past Whimpey.

Next set of 11 on 11:
Jones misses DHB on a slant.
Moats beats Gilbert off the edge forcing Jones to step up and run for short gain.
Bryant incomplete on a 9 while AV holds off H Jones just long enough to get pass away.
Murphy incomplete to Coates on a come back route. No look off and the D just flowing to ball.
Murphy complete to Coates on an out.
McCullers holds ground on a draw for a minimum gain.
Jones again to Heath on a seam. Best pass he has thrown, zipped it in there.
Toss play goes for minus 6 as Moats blows past Van Dyk.
Murphy completes a pair of passes but under pressure once by Tuitt and 2nd play in face of crossfire blitz he hits check down. Moves okay in pocket and showed eyes staying on receivers even with pressure.

Boat load of special team drills today. All I'll say about that is coach Smith vocal with his teaching and keeps the players moving.

1 on 1 drill with OLine vs DL and olb's:
    Beachum over Green
Heyward overpowers Foster, Foster needs to be a better knee bender.
    Wallace holds out McClendon
Tuitt n DeCastro about a draw. Tuitt has good bull rush keeping his hands inside.
    Van Dyk holds out Dupree.
Van Dyk against Chickilo a draw. Chick with bull rush attempt.
    DeCastro stones Tuitt.
    McCullers good push on Wallace.
Geathers and Hubbard battle to a draw.
McCullers twice gets the best of Dismukes.
    Thomas beats Dieffenbach wide.
Dupree gets pushed wide by Palmer
    Chickilo gets inside against Palmer.
Chickilo gets the edge on Van Dyk Tomlin screaming out "good speed Chick".
H Jones turns corner on AV.
Palmer rides Moats wide. Palmer's feet are not bad.
    Beachum holds out Jarvis.

    last 11 on 11:

Tuitt n Heyward shut down 5 hole run. Those 2 solid all day.
Thomas moves up to cover slot receiver and fires off edge causing Jones to make quick release. He completes pass to 83. Jones at least getting ball out better then I have seen him do in the past.
Clear catches a seam pass for apx 20 yd gain with Dupree putting good pressure on qb.
DeCastro opens hole for Harris who is quick through for solid gain.
Bell bounces one outside for about 30. He looks sharp.
Wheaton another good grab on a drag in front of Gay.
Murphy 2 complete back to back to Phillips both times against Fogg.
J James cathes 10 yd pass in traffic. Has shown decent hands so far.

    post practice:

CJ Goodwin working with Jones on routes.
AB taking extra reps on jugs. Leader by example.
Murphy n Phillips working a pitch n catch.
DHB taking late reps on jugs.
LB's all staying late working on hitting the sleds.
    Heyward running extra sprints.
Wheaton who had a solid day doing extra reps on jugs.
J James takes extra reps on jugs.
Rogers running a bunch of extra sprints.

    Quick notes:
Holliman in 1 on 1 played double move well not getting sucked in keeping good coverage.
Holliman under cut out route forcing high incomplete pass again in 1 on 1 drill.
Not much cover 2 today. Single high against trips and a boat load of nickle.

Murphy sounds exciting. Love to see where he can go. Like what I'm hearing about the Dline. Love to see that dominant again. Good news on Jesse James.

Awesome analysis, brother. It looks like I will be heading to a training camp practice in Latrobe this weekend for the first time ever (hard to believe, huh?). I'm driving out to Pittsburgh to take my 10 year old daughter to Heinz on Sunday night for a One Direction concert (oh joy...65,000 screaming pre-teen girls...I won those tickets for her last season during a designated driver drawing at a Steeler game), and we'll stop in Latrobe that afternoon on the way. I'm not an autograph guy, but my daughter might prefer to get a spot where the players come by after practice to sign stuff instead of sitting in the stands or on the hill to get a good full view of the practice itself. We'll see.

I like hearing about the near-exclusive 3-wide sets. There's no doubt that 11-personnel is our optimal formation by far, in virtually any situation from first and ten to third and long or goal line. Ben attempting a fade to Johnson at the goal line is weird, though. The fullback shouldn't even be in the game there, and certainly not to run a fade pattern in the end zone, considering all of your other options.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

...unless Johnson was lining up at TE for some reps while Heath was sitting....
Actually, my post was NOT about you...but, if the shoe fits, feel free to lace that &!+€# up and wear it.
