The NFL is a corporate environment. In such an environment, individualism is minimized at almost all cost. It is what people complain about when (e.g.) they talk about the old days in Vegas when "they knew you by name" in the casinos, etc. It is not about flavor, diversity, etc. It is only about the bottom line: money.
If the majority felt the opposite way, this dude still would be playing. If you said what he said in the 1950's, he might be applauded. If Don Sterling said what he said in the 50's, he'd be patted on the back. But whether you agree or not, this is now. If you want, you can say that this guy was suspended not for making homophobic remarks. He was suspended for being a moron and screwing up at doing his job (personal conduct policy?)
