He's probably hoping to have a great year and cash in next year.

He is an insurance policy...you have guys like Vince Williams and Sean Spence still on the roster...if one (or both) of them pan out this year, you don't have a high priced backup with a big contract on the bench...

If Moats does well, you have first crack at resigning him...

I think it's a solid signing. Nothing earth-shattering, shores up us a bit in a thin area. If we find someone better, good. If we don't then at least we aren't signing guys off their couches.

Report: Steelers Sign Linebacker Arthur Moats To One-Year Deal

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) – With the Steelers still looking at help for linebacker, reports have sufaced that they’ve agreed to a one-year deal with former Buffalo Bills linebacker Arthur Moats.

The 26-year-old Moats was drafted by the Bills in the sixth round, 178th overall in the 2010 draft out of James Madison University.

Moats has played in 59 games over his four years in the league recording 141 combined tackles (80 solo, 61 assists), 5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 1 fumble recovery. Moats can also serve as a contributor to the Steelers on special teams.

What this signing also means though is that a return to the Steelers for free agent James Harrison is now very unlikely given that the team has filled their need at that position.

I don't see how that's relevant?? We always carry 2 extra OLB's and Moats might be more of an ILB like Brandon Johnson was who could play OLB also

    Bob Labriola @BobLabriola:

Arthur Moats is a backup OLB who also can play ILB and will be a core special teams guy.

We're in big trouble if he's an insurance policy for Williams (who didn't really show much last year) and Spence (who hasn't played an NFL down). IMO, there is still a huge hole at ILB.
