No "sense of urgency" for Steelers to extend Roethlisberger

By Jack Finn on Mar 15 2014

ESPN's Scott Brown is reporting that there is no sense of urgency on behalf of the Steelers to work out contract extension with Ben Roethlisberger

For those who are expecting a contract extension for Ben Roethlisberger in the coming days or weeks, it may be time to temper expectations.

ESPN's Scott Brown reported Saturday night that "there doesn’t appear to be any sense of urgency" on the behalf of the Steelers to get an extension done with their Franchise quarterback.

Roethlisberger has two years remaining on the 8 year $100 million dollar contract he signed in 2008, and his cap hit for the 2014 season is projected to be $18.9 million.

An extension could help reduce that cap hit, and in turn free up some much needed cap space for the Steelers to manoeuvre in Free Agency and add depth or perhaps starter quality players across the roster. As of today the Steelers have somewhere in the vicinity of $3.5 million in cap space available

An extension would also essentially lock up Roethlisberger, 32 years old, untill retirement. Although there may be no urgency to get a contract extension done immediately, it will happen sooner or later.

Big Ben is one of the very best quarterbacks in the league, and took large strides in offesnive coordinator Todd Hayley's system last season. The Steelers need him if they are to bounce back from two 8-8 seasons in a row.

Both the Steelers General Manager and President have publicly said they want Ben to retire a Steeler, so at some point a contract extension should be reached, just maybe not this year.

No urgency because I believe that both sides are very comfortable with each other. Player trusts that when the team says that they will sit down and hammer out a fair deal that it will happen.

Steelers unsure when Big Ben contract will get done

Jay Cutler landed a huge new deal with the Chicago Bears in January. Could Ben Roethlisberger be the next big-ticket quarterback to get paid?

A deal isn't on the immediate horizon, according to Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert.

"We'll get through free agency, get through the draft and see where we are," Colbert said Sunday at the NFL meetings in Orlando, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "Traditionally we have done quarterbacks (contracts) two years out, but as (team president) Art (Rooney) stated, we may or may not be in a position to do something this summer."

Roethlisberger is under contract through the 2015 season, and is scheduled to earn base salaries of $12 million and $11 million over the next two years. For comparison purposes, Cutler will make $22.5 million and $15.5 million in base salaries over the next two seasons.

Colbert said deals for other quarterbacks won't dictate the Steelers' handling of Roethlisberger, who turned 32 this month.

"What happens in the market, you're aware of what's going on but it doesn't set the parameters," Colbert said. "I believe the parameters that are set are set by the team and the player, what we would be willing to do and what the player is willing to accept.

"Sure, they know what so and so makes, but it's finding a common ground between two parties is what we're concerned about, not so much being in compliance with the league (and what other teams are doing)."

Colbert has said the Steelers are "unanimous" in their wish for Roethlisberger to retire with the organization. With a whopping salary cap charge of $18.9 million coming in 2014, locking up Roethlisberger sooner rather than later makes sense on multiple levels.
