I don't see how they can afford him.

The cap hit on Mitchel's deal was only about $2.5 million. The can afford MJD.

And if they could somehow phenagle the space to sign MJD, wouldn't that pretty much put an end to getting Cotchery and/or Carrington?

    (Unless they restructure/extend Ben?)

Sign Worilds to a long term deal & Restructuring Ben could put another 5-8 million on the books.

Cotchery may even wait around til June 1 with a "gentlemen's agreement" type deal and sign after the Woodley transaction frees up some money. He has said in the past this is where he wants to be. If he doesn't find anything else better before the draft, and the Steelers don't take a WR early, he might still be available.

If Cotch or Harrison want to return they will trust the Rooneys to sign after June 1 if they have a handshake deal.

This could make for a very surprising FA period. Also could be a very good one. If Mitchel is Ryan Clark #2 or hopefully better. If MJD can add something to the offense and mentor Bell. I still hope to add James Harrison, Cotchery, Keisel and not sure how it would be possible but I would still like Carrington. That could turn out to be a really nice haul in FA for the short term and a good offseason so far.

Drew could resemble Bettis in his later years...particularly productive in short yardage and goal line

Maurice Jones-Drew to visit Steelers again on Thursday

Wed, Mar 19th, 2014 by DePaoli

Former Jacksonville Jaguars star running back Maurice Jones-Drew met with Steelers officials today for a free agency visit and will be back again on Thursday meeting with the Steelers for the second straight day, Albert Breer of the NFL Network reports.

The Steelers interest in Jones-Drew is said to be serious but money talks at the end of the day, even in a depressed running back market. Pittsburgh has just $2.2 million in cap space. The team gains an additional $8 million in cap space on June 2 due to the June 1 designation release of LaMarr Woodley.

On the receiver front, wide receiver Lance Moore also met with the Steelers today and left without a contract. It's not believed he will meet with the Steelers again on Thursday.

The Steelers remain in talks with Jerricho Cotchery who is their first choice to sign at wide receiver. Cotchery is also in discussions with the Carolina Panthers and has not ruled out making one more visit this week with an interested team, before he makes a decision on where to sign, a league source says.

The Steelers seek a No. 3 type receiver who could step into a No. 2 role if needed. The team had shown interest in James Jones who signed with Oakland and expressed interest in bringing Mario Manningham in for a visit, prior to Manningham signing with the New York Giants yesterday.
