Steelers, Polamalu to rework deal

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/10554292/pittsburgh-steelers-not-release-safety-troy-polamalu-per-sources While they still need salary-cap space, the Pittsburgh Steelers will not release veteran safety Troy Polamalu, league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Wednesday morning.
One source said the Rooney family simply is too loyal and Polamalu has been two valuable.

Joe Sargent/Getty ImagesSafety Troy Polamalu has been with the Steelers since he entered the NFL in 2003.

Either the two sides will try to work out a restructured contract that will lower Polamalu's $10.88 million salary-cap figure for the coming season, or the Steelers could get the eight-time Pro Bowler to accept a pay cut.
Polamalu, who turns 33 next month, played every snap last season and recorded 85 tackles while intercepting two passes and forcing five fumbles.
A 12-year veteran, Polamalu has 710 career tackles, 32 interceptions and 13 forced fumbles with the Steelers. He is an eight-time Pro Bowl selection and was the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2010.
After signing outside linebacker Jason Worilds to a one-year, $9.75 million transition tender on Tuesday, the Steelers are $15.5 million over the cap, according to ESPN Stats & Info, and they have some work to do to get in compliance with the cap before next Tuesday.
Polamalu, who has long been one of the faces of the Steelers, told ESPN.com last December that he plans to honor his contract, which has one year left on it.
Steelers president Art Rooney II said during a conference call with season ticket holders in February that he wants Polamalu to play his entire career in Pittsburgh.
ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter and ESPN.com Steelers reporter Scott Brown contributed to this report.

Heath and Troy still have some tread on the tires...modest extensions for both are in order, IMO...

Steelers signed SS Troy Polamalu to a two-year contract extension through 2016.

GM Kevin Colbert signed both Polamalu and Heath Miller to two-year extensions through 2016 on Wednesday. Polamalu was previously scheduled to earn an $8.25 million base salary in 2014 and count over $10.8 million against the cap. Both numbers have surely been reduced. Polamalu started all 16 games last season.

Hey, that's pretty good news, probably not for Ike, Keisel and Hood, but good news for Steeler fans in general.

I would hope that Keisel would learn from fellow BYU alum and Steeler teammate, Chris Hoke...the grass isn't always greener....

What did Hoke do to have you mention the grass isn't always greener comment? He played for the Steelers from 2003 or 2004 until 2011 when he retired at age 35 (or maybe he was 34) or at least that's what I can recall about Hoke.

He did.

Hoke was allowed to pursue free agency as well...went on some visits...

In the end, he realized how good he had it in Pittsburgh...he probably took less money, but he also probably extended his career and has two SB rings...

How old will he be when this contract runs out? More dead money on the cap. I can see why Rooney is an Obama supporter; he always employs the "kick debt down the road to ensure crappy future" policies.
