Tomlin has control over his staff
Also, surrounding yourself with former head coaches isn't a guy fearing for his job, that's just surrounding yourself with great football people.
No, Tomlin doesn't hire assistants like a coach afraid for his job.
He doesn't seem to coach like a coach afraid for his job, either. A little of the latter might be a good thing, IMO.
Really? You think he hired LeBeau and Arians? You think he's the one that's all but promised Keith Butler, another 3-4 defensive coach, the job when LeBeau retires? He said Arians was coming back just before Art fired him and brought in Dick Haley's boy.
I think he looks like a coach who's growing frustrated over his lack of control, as he should be.

Except that it did.
Start with Arians, the York High graduate. Tomlin said Monday after the playoff loss that he anticipated both of his coordinators would return for the 2012 season. Art Rooney later said some coaches might "retire."
The Post-Gazette reported that not only did Arians want to come back but that Tomlin told him he wanted him back.
Then, the Steelers issued a statement that Arians had "retired" with a comment from Tomlin wishing him well in his retirement. A week later, Arians took a job as offensive coordinator of the Indianapolis Colts.
A couple of weeks after that, Tomlin said that it was his decision to make a change at OC.
Do I think he was getting some pressure to make that change? Very likely. But I believe the final decision was his...I don't think he's lying about that.
It wouldn't be the only time Tomlin made an abrupt personnel change. Remember when he fired the STs coach (?Everest) after indicating that his staff was set for the season?
tomlin might be allowed to hire some low level coaches/assistants
steelers = 3 ring circus with tomlin being the head clown
