it was a wasted opportunity to gain a valuable pick especially with the stupid decision to trade away our 3rd this year for a 3rd string qb

They didn't give up a 3rd round pick...

Or, the WR corp would not have been fine...

Also, the Steelers traded the pick for the Shamarko Thomas pick, not the Landry Jones pick...

He wouldn't have been the pick in the 3rd anyway...because he was a pick in the 4th...

Wheaton was the 3rd round pick...

Also, Jones was selected after they traded for the Thomas pick...

Essentially, yes, they did. The choice was to take a 3rd round pick in 2013 or keep Sanders. They chose to keep Sanders.

That's not giving up a third round pick.

They did give up this year's third round pick for the chance to draft Shamarko Thomas...

It's a matter of semantics, but the practical impact is that the Steelers had a decision to make: do you take a late third round pick in 2013 or pay an extra $1.3 million dollars to keep Manny Sanders for one year. The Steelers chose the second option. It's no different than if the Steelers had possessed the late third round pick and traded it for a year of Sanders.

ok. landry jones never would have been picked in the 4th round if they only had 1 4th round pick.
thomas would have been the selection in round 4.
i could almost see giving up a a 2014 4th round to get a 2013 4th round(to draft landry jones) but to give up a 3rd was ignorant

But, as we both said, they didn't give up a 3rd for Landry Jones...they gave it up for Thomas...
