Cowher praises Bettis by knocking his quarterbacks

Posted by Michael David Smith on January 28, 2014

Former Steelers coach Bill Cowher is pressing the case that his old running back, Jerome Bettis, deserves to be voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday. And part of Cowher’s case is that those Steelers teams didn’t have very good quarterbacks.

Cowher, the Steelers’ coach for Bettis’s entire 10-year run in Pittsburgh, told the Post-Gazette that Bettis had a harder job than most running backs, because most running backs get more help from their teams’ passing games than Bettis ever got.

“With all due respect,” Cowher said, “for most of his career he played in an offense without a quarterback you could name.”

If you can name those quarterbacks, they’re names you’d probably rather forget if you like good offensive football. The names of Mike Tomczak, Kordell Stewart, Kent Graham and Tommy Maddox don’t exactly inspire fear in opposing defenses.

“Whoever it was, any of our quarterbacks, when you played us, we were a running offense and what we accomplished with a running offense was pretty amazing,” Cowher said. “He gave us our identity. We ran what people knew we were going to run. We were a running football team. If you wanted to stop the Pittsburgh Steelers, you had to stop the run first.”

If Bettis makes the Hall of Fame, his average of 3.9 yards per carry would be tied for the lowest of any Hall of Fame running back. But Cowher does have a point: Most of those Hall of Fame running backs played with better quarterbacks than Bettis did.

I had been saying this for years...Bettis wasn't a threat to catch the ball and would be tied for the lowest ypc in the Hall. I think he would be tied with Riggs. He isn't a shoe in. Cowher makes some good points and I think Bettis eventually gets there. Not sure if it's this year or not.

Cowher doesn't need to make excuses for Bettis. Jerome deserves to get in on his own volition. Bettis was at one time the 4th leading rusher in the history of the game. He still stands at number 6. Every other running back in the top 10, including those behind Bettis is in the Hall of Fame(excluding LT who is not yet eligible). Bettis isn't only a shoe in, it will be a crime if he doesn't get in, especially with a lackluster list of finalists like we have this year.

Cowher better sing the praises of Bettis and he owes Bettis the world for making him appear to be a far better coach than he probably was with his conservative, uninspired, no risk approach to the offense. Without a once in a generation RB like Bettis, Cower would have lost many more games coaching the way he did.

I'll never forget Bettis's rookie year with the Rams and how he ran all over the Steelers. The Steelers defense was supposed to be all this and that and Bettis showed them differently. Compared to some of the folks in the HOF, Bettis should be receiving his gold jacket. Not even compared but on his own merit. Just the fact he was a running back that wasn't a head case should do him well. Between receivers, running backs they seem to have a tendency to be the sideshows of their teams and Bettis was never that.

Easy for Cowher to say, the one who was in love with those same qb's he's dogging.

Was it the chicken or the egg? Perhaps Cowher adapted to the players on his team and coached the way he did because of Bettis.

It would be rather difficult to play and win a football game if prior to the game the coach was saying things like, "We hope to keep it close, we know we aren't up to par at the quarterback position.", "Jerome is our only offensive threat.", "Okay guys, we're going to lean on Jerome again this week, maybe the quarterback can make a play or two.", etc.

Of course, he touted them, he didn't have a choice once he made the decision that any of them were his quarterback.
