    The penalty would have been a pre-snap penalty and the kick should have never been taken, similar to illegal motion or delay of game. He simply would have been taking the kick from 36 yards instead of 41, if the penalty is called correctly.

    If it is a pre-snap penalty on the defense, like offsides, the refs allow the play to proceed and give the offense the option to decline the outcome of the play and re-try...

    Yes, I think you're correct here. In fact, didn't the Pats* lose a game on this penalty earlier in the season? I thought the opposing team missed the first try, then made the second one...I believe maybe it was the Jets (?).

    Yea, this is probably correct, what happens if the officials throw the flag and the ball isn't snapped? The long snapper can't really see what's happening he's locating the holder, so it seems the flags could be thrown and the play blown dead before the ball is snapped and kicked.

    It's not like with a quarterback under center that could tap the center to get the play started when he knows the defense was offside.
