The defense hasn't played well this year, but there is a serious talent issue. Cam Heyward is really the only starting caliber NFL lineman on the roster. Keisel is also starting caliber, but he has been hurt. Hood, Woods and McClendon are backup level talent, at best. He's playing the likes of Vince Williams and Terrance Garvin at linebacker and the secondary is aging. Throw in the fact that Woodley is oft-injured and Jones doesn't have enough functional strength yet, and it is apparent that the defensive problems are a talent issue, not a coaching/scheme issue.

gotta make it work with the players you have... the problem with the talent excuse is the learning curve.

Even if we got 4 great players on D next year it would take 3 years for them to "get it"

I'm ok with this. But maybe LeBeau should go up in the box and groom an assistant on the sideline like Carnell Lake. I think our defense is lacking some serious talent. We essentially have 2 guys who can rush the passer on the field at 1 time. Heyward & whoever is playing ROLB.

I would rather Butler take over. If DL does stay...Players shouldn't stay because they are "DL Guys". Troy, IKE, Clark, Keisel, Foote stay/comeback at the Steelers price IF they have anything left.

That's nonsense. How many talent deficiencies can any scheme overcome? At the end of the day, you need talent.

Yeah, lets face it...we don't really have any big names on our D right now except for an aging Polamalu and a floundering Woodley. Most of the other old guard will be gone next year. If we are lucky, a few guys like Heyward, Worilds, and the Shark will hit apogee soon and we will be able to rebuild some identity.
