Le'Veon Bell, Isaac Redman co-starters for Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers aren't known for throwing rookies into the fire, but Le'Veon Bell is a different story.

Bell and Isaac Redman were listed as co-starters at running back on the team's unofficial depth chart, Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Wednesday.

The designation says much more about Bell. He missed this past Saturday's preseason loss to the New York Giants with knee stiffness, but he's expected to start Monday's tilt against the Washington Redskins. Bell has earned genuine praise in his first career training camp, and it's his job to lose, no matter what the depth chart says.

Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley was married to a stop-and-start committee approach last season -- and Redman (and Jonathan Dwyer) will see snaps -- but we expect Bell to slide into featured-back duties. The Steelers chose him over Eddie Lacy in the draft, and coach Mike Tomlin said of Bell last week, "I think how he is running the ball speaks for itself."

August depth charts don't mean squat; Pittsburgh's roll call proves as much. The Steelers believe they've found a difference-maker in their backfield. Barring a collapse, Bell will carry the load in his first NFL season.

    Life lesson: Seize the moment.

Dwyer and Redman both had the chance to seize the job last year. Both has silver platter opportunities... Redman, after his final two games of that previous season. And Dwyer, after Redman didn't realize his own opportunity. Both basically feeling entitled to think they could take a laissez-faire approach to a starting job in the NFL.

Le’Veon Bell heads to top of depth chart

Posted by Mike Florio on August 14, 2013

Rookie running back Le’Veon Bell hasn’t taken a snap for the Steelers in a game. When he does for the first time, it could be as the starter.

Via Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com, the Steelers have moved the second-round draft pick from No. 3 on the depth chart to No. 1, where he currently shares the job with Isaac Redman.

“The guys who are calling the shots are confident in me,” Bell told reporters when advised of the development, per Hensley. “It’s good motivation. I’m going to keep striving to be the best I can be. I’m going to continue to compete.”

Bell didn’t play in the preseason opener as an apparent precaution. He said he’ll play in the second preseason game, against the Redskins.

Bell looked good for a rookie pass blocking at camp. He did not look like a rookie catching the check downs where he caught everything and seems like a natural as a receiver. But that was practice and so I want to see what he can do against Washington. This rookie class across the board has a high ceiling. Best group I believe in some time.

I'm not sure it was laissez-faire.. I think those guys aren't built to be #1's.

The only news here is that Redman stays in front of Dwyer in the race to be Bell's #2. The rest was expected.

My ONLY concern about Bell is the amount of mileage he has on him for a young guy. It was my only reservation. If Bell stays healthy, the sky is the limit. He truly has it all...power, vision, hands, toughness, shiftiness, light feet, patience etc.

I don't think the mileage on Bell at the collegiate level will be a problem for him but rather a plus as it made him more game ready to start his NFL career as a #1 running back.
"Let's see...who do we play next Sunday?"
