Typically, the back side of a defense benefits from a great front 3 or 4, Steel Curtain, Tampa 2, Doomsday defense, Purple People Eaters some of the greatest defenses in the history of the game are known for their front 4. I'm not saying the backers and backs behind these guys aren't great, but it helps a lot to have a Joe Greene, Merlin Olson, Deacon Jones, Alan Page and Warren Sapp in front of you.
