LaMarr Woodley won't recant Joe Flacco comment (Balt. Sun article, prepare to puke)

Remember a couple of summers ago when Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley said on national television that Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco would never win a Super Bowl “in this lifetime?”

Even though Flacco was named the Super Bowl MVP in February after the Ravens won their second Lombardi Trophy, Woodley didn’t back away from his comments in an interview with ESPN this week.

"I don't take it back at all," Woodley told ESPN’s Jamison Hensley, my former colleague here at The Sun. "As a player on any team, you're never going to say your rival is going to win the Super Bowl. That's knocking you out of the tournament that year. Somebody on their team pretty sure would say that as well. That's the nature of what it is. A lot of people don't understand. They're going to take it the way they want to take it."

Flacco didn’t take kindly to Woodley’s well-publicized shot in June 2011, saying that Woodley didn’t know what he was talking about and that those kinds of comments “kind of piss you off a little bit.”

Flacco and the Ravens have since gotten revenge, though.

They swept the season series against the Steelers in 2011 and won the AFC North for the first time in Flacco’s career. They took the division again in 2012 before taking the playoffs by storm.

In the playoffs, Flacco had the performance of a lifetime, tying Joe Montana’s all-time record with 11 touchdown passes in a single postseason, including three in the Super Bowl -- the game Woodley said Flacco would never win.

    $$$$

Since Woodley made those remarks, he has been mostly out of shape and injured due to being out of shape...and Flacco has won a Super Bowl. Now LaMarr is trying to defend his ill-advised comments--but he's only making himself look worse. Please, just admit you were wrong, and from now on, do your talking on the field.

This is a perfect example that just because you have the right to speak freely, it doesn't mean you always should.

When in doubt, just shut up.

Better for people to think you are stupid then to open your mouth and remove all doubt
As many on this site think ... The Rooney's suck, Colbert sucks, Tomlin sucks, the coaches suck, and the players suck.

    but Go Steelers!!!

I've been burned in the past by some "grand" statements. So I can't criticize. Just part of the maturation process. Especially against a heated rival when emotions can become involved. He'll figure it out, hopefully sooner rather than later. One thing to remember: you better make sure your sh*t is wired tight before you go pointing fingers. Bottom line is Woodley better bring it this year or he's just another loud mouth.

Nothing wrong with talking as long as you man up and admit when you are wrong. Woodley could 've said "never say never" and laughed it off.

IMO its good for the rivalry...
