Steelers Depth Chart: Guy Whimper likely will take over right tackle with Mike Adams out

By Neal Coolong on Jun 2 2013

Whimper was signed to provide depth at tackle, and he played on the right side with the Jaguars in 2012. Second-year OL Kelvin Beachum replaced Adams last season over the last six games of the year, but he was moved inside, where he'll likely stay, considering Adams is expected to recover fully.

Steelers offensive tackle Mike Adams is expected to make a full recovery after being stabbed by alleged robbers Saturday in Pittsburgh. He is said to be out 6-8 weeks, but will be healthy for training camp in late July.

In the meantime, the Steelers have one more OTAs session starting June 3 in Pittsburgh, and a full team minicamp June 11-13. Second-year OT Kelvin Beachum, who replaced Adams over the last six games in the 2012 season, and newly signed OT Guy Whimper, will likely take reps at right tackle in Adams' absence.

Beachum had been taking reps at center in the Steelers' first two OTA sessions, and had worked at guard earlier in the offseason. His versatility is valuable, but they will likely keep Beachum working to learn the guard positions and center unless Adams' injury is more serious than initial reports suggest.

It's an opportunity to truly learn to be a Steelers offensive linemen - replace someone due to injury. It's been the least stable position unit in the NFL over the last few seasons, and while incidents like Adams this weekend cannot be anticipated, the Steelers signed a veteran tackle for this exact scenario.

Whimper did not excel in Jacksonville, to put it mildly, but they did not run an outside zone scheme, as the Steelers are expected to do this season.

Whimper could not stick on one of the worst teams in the NFL and he's been graded as one of the worst linemen in the league as well. You don't have to be a player personnel person to know this signing blows and the Steelers are in deep @#$% if this guy has to see significant playing time. Double Yoi!

Steelers vs. Redskins: Guy Whimper moves from tackle to guard on depth chart

By SteelCityRoller on Aug 14 2013

In the wake of the injury to guard Justin Cheadle, the Guy Whimper experiment at tackle seems to be over as he is officially listed at left guard on the team's most recent depth chart.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have not been exactly impressed with what they've seen from free-agent Guy Whimper, who was signed for his veteran experience at offensive tackle. Now, he's a guard.

On the most recent depth chart released prior to the upcoming preseason game between the Steelers and the Washington Redskins on Monday night, Whimper takes the place of the injured Justin Cheadle as the second left guard behind starter Ramon Foster, and ahead of third-place Mike Golic Jr.

Granted, a depth chart is simply a formality in preseason action, and the team will play Whimper wherever they see fit; however the fact he is no longer in contention for a tackle position on paper may limit his chance to earn a final roster spot unless he can invoke more optimism with his interior play.

The depth chart also seems to capture the standing of Golic, who has impressed with his capacity for learning but disappointed with his ability to execute. Golic is probably shooting for a practice squad spot at this point, unless he can prove he belongs higher on the depth chart than Whimper.

I have heard varying reports on Whimper. I know Tunch is impressed with the guy. He likes his physicality. Probably a guy who is better in a phone booth than out in space.

He isn't a tackle, and I think that has been proven. But, the reports are that he has looked very strong at Guard as of recent.

Certainly hope you are correct as a team always needs back-up o-line but also hope (and pray) that the 2 starting guards don't need to be spelled this season by anyone.
