Will Allen Visiting the Cowboys

Will Allen, Justin Durant to visit Cowboys

We’re through a couple of weeks of free agency and that means that the market of available players has thinned to the point where cost-conscious teams can start shopping for veteran help at low prices.

The Cowboys are going to be doing just that this week. Bryan Broaddus of the team’s website reports that safety Will Allen and linebacker Justin Durant will be visiting the team on Monday.

Allen has spent the last three years with the Steelers and started seven times last season as Troy Polamalu battled injuries. The Cowboys hope to have Barry Church healthy, but there’s not much else on hand after releasing Gerald Sensabaugh earlier this offseason. Safety’s a spot where the Cowboys need to improve this offseason, something signing Allen would not accomplish on its own.

Durant has started 26 games over the last two years for the Lions and recorded 103 tackles for the team last season. The Cowboys need someone to go with Sean Lee and Bruce Carter in their new 4-3 look, something Durant could provide if the price is right.

So we're so thin in the secondary now, we'll have to draft a couple of D-backs. On top of that we need to find a RB, WR, and some LB depth.

Surprised the Steelers haven't re-signed Allen yet. He was more than solid last season, and we definitely need depth at S. Don't think he'd be looking for a ton of $$$, either.

Agreed, he played well when Troy was out and is good insurance in case Troy gets injured again.

Wondering if they'll try to bring James back. Now that the Ugly Birds signed Dumervil, James seems to be running out of possibilities. Might get us through one more year at LB while we draft for other needs. Still thinking a TE would be a good option too.

Steelers probably have their sights on drafting a SS/FS or 2 this year, and might feel that Golden & Rogers-Cromartie might offer enough 'veteran' experience to compete with the rookies for a roster spot.

While Chadman isn't against the idea- does it retard Worilds growth by bringing Harrison back?

Probably so, at least until Woodley pulls his groin or hamstring and Worlids steps in there. If Woodley has a big year, Worilds might split some time with James, keep James fresh. James showed he still has it, late in last season. Just a couple of pennies from this POV.

It shouldn't take much to get Allen back but who knows what the Steelers have planned. I agree that he played very well when Troy was out.

    Not disagreeing with you, necessarily.

That said, not sure if we saw any reason beyond injury to not let Harrison start fulltime. If he's re-signed, he's not coming back as a back-up. Not even a rotational player. The only reason he's gone is cost, not his level of play.

If Harrison comes back, Chadman expects the Steelers would look at drafting an OLB because that shows little faith in Worilds.
