No reason for that.
Not sure where you came up with the idea that two years of players careers are wasted???? They get young defensive players on the field. Young players don't become full time starters until they are ready. There is a reason for that. The fact behind the Steelers reasoning is that they typically rank among the best defenses in the league doing things their way. How can you disagree with that fact?

Defensive Points vs rank (Since Lebeau returned)
    2004 1st
    2005 3rd
    2006 11th
    2007 2nd
    2008 1st
    2009 12th
    2010 1st
    2011 1st
    2012 6th

And you believe it can get much better then that? Good luck.

Nobody expected James Harrison to be Joey Porter.

Stats completely based on yards allowed. Very misleading. Factor in the ever decreasing number of sacks and INTs the "old guys" who have this wonderful in depth knowledge of the defense aren't getting and it becomes much more obvious why this defense is not the impactful defense it was five years ago.

that 6th ranking for 2012 is actually in points allowed. not sure about the rest of the years presented.

Those above rankings were based on points allowed not by yards allowed. I believe that points allowed is the most important stat for a defense. Still consider those ranking misleading?

Turnovers and sacks are nice but can't be relied on to win games all the time. I also believe that pressure or the perception of pressure is more important then the number of sacks. Staying healthy should help to improve the number of turnovers. Injuries decreased the amount of pressure, the # turnovers, and # of sacks by the defense last season. Injuries to Harrison, Troy, and Woodley hurt the overall production of the defense. We will have to wait to see if Troy and Woodley can stay health and if Worilds can step up and play well.

Problem hasn't been our defense. It has been our offense. When you have a potential top 5 QB and your offense is ranked in the bottom half of the league most seasons something is wrong. I pray a LT capable OT is available in the first or second round. Would love someone like Lane Johnson to be sitting there at 17.
