Injury News for Jets Game

Foster had an optical migraine with blurred vision. He is fine and expected to play this weekend. Gilbert will be limited early in the week, but it expected to play. Harrison will practice lightly early in the week and ramp it up as we approach the game. If his knee responds well, he will play.

Steelers’ Harrison could play against Jets

By Alan Robinson
Published: Tuesday, September 11, 2012

James Harrison is closer to returning to the Steelers.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday the five-time Pro Bowl linebacker worked out Monday, will run Wednesday and hasn’t been ruled out of playing Sunday against the New York Jets. Harrison hasn’t played since last season and has practiced only sporadically because of a left knee injury.

Last week, Harrison practiced on Monday but did little the rest of the week and ended up missing his sixth game to injury in the past two seasons. Going into the 2011 season, Harrison had missed only one game in four seasons.

Harrison is recovering from an unspecified knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery in August and forced him to miss training camp.

The two offensive linemen injured during the 31-19 loss in Denver on Sunday night — Ramon Foster and Marcus Gilbert — should be ready for the Jets, who opened the season with a 48-24 rout of the Bills. Foster (eye injury) and Gilbert (hyperextended knee) both left the game early, forcing the Steelers to play the rest of the way with backups Mike Adams and Doug Legursky. Adams was playing in his first NFL game.

Safety Troy Polamalu has a strained calf that may limit him in practice early in the week, but Tomlin said he should be ready for the Jets.

This will be the Jets’ first visit to Heinz Field since the Steelers held them off to win 24-19 in the AFC Championship Game in January 2011. Slightly more than a month before that, the Jets won there 22-17 in the regular season. The Jets have won the past two regular season games between the teams.

James Harrison worked out Monday

Updated: September 11, 2012
ESPN.com news services

PITTSBURGH -- Injured Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison worked out on Monday and coach Mike Tomlin says there's a chance the four-time Pro Bowler could play in Sunday's home opener against the New York Jets.

Harrison sat out the entire preseason while nursing a left knee injury. He underwent a minor procedure on the knee last month and didn't play in a 31-19 season-opening loss at Denver.

Tomlin says Tuesday the team will monitor Harrison's progress throughout the week.

"We will see where he is," Tomlin said, according to the Steelers' official website. "We will follow the same protocol we did with him last week. We will work him up to activity and see how his knee responds to that activity and let that be our guide in terms of his participation."

The Steelers do expect to have safety Ryan Clark back. Clark sat out the Broncos' game as a precaution due to a sickle cell trait that makes it dangerous for him to exert himself at high altitude.

Pittsburgh expects to have starting right guard Ramon Foster and starting right tackle Marcus Gilbert for the Jets. Both players left the opener with minor injuries.

PITTSBURGH — If Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is true to his word, the NFL’s best cover cornerback will get plenty of action Sunday.
Over the years, teams have often shied away from throwing in Darrelle Revis’ direction. More often than not, the Aliquippa native shuts down opposing wide receivers he covers. He’s already racked up 19 career interceptions with the Jets, the latest coming this past Sunday in a 48-28 win over the Bills.
That has scared off a number of quarterabcks who chose not to throw in the direction of “Revis Island.”
“You’ve got to play football and utilize all eligibles. He’ll be defending one of them,” Tomlin said Tuesday if the Steelers will dare challenge Revis. “We’re not going to shy away from confrontation. But at the same time, we understand his reputation is well-earned and deserved.”
Revis, who’s in his sixth pro season, suffered a mild concussion Sunday when he was accidently kicked in the head by a teammate. But he’s expected to play this week against the Steelers.
PLENTY OF THREE-RECEIVER SETS
In their 31-19 loss in Denver, the Steelers ran 71 offensive plays. Only 25 of them were designed running plays.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger passed 40 times. He was sacked five times and he ran once when forced out of the pocket on a pass play.
Of those 71 snaps, the Steelers lined up in three wide receiver sets 52 times.
No doubt, the Steelers believe their “Young Money Crew” of Mike Wallace, Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders are capable play-makers. Also, with Roethlisberger using the no-huddle for much of the game, the Steelers couldn’t sub out of their three-receiver sets.
“We feel comfortable with our wide receiver group, not only three but four. Jerricho Cotchery is (also) a valuable member of our group,” Tomlin said. “Of course, the way the game unfolded, that personnel group was a consistent one for us. We felt like we were capable of moving the ball. It’s an asset to us so we utilize it.”
MORE REPS FOR DWYER
One of the bright spots in Denver was the production from running back Jonathan Dwyer. He carried nine times for 43 yards, an average of 4.8 per pop. He fared much better than starter Isaac Redman, who carried 11 times for only 20 yards (1.8 ypc).
“We haven’t sorted out specifically what that rotation is to this point,” Tomlin said of the division of labor for Sunday’s game against the Jets. “Obviously, I thought Jonathan Dwyer provided a spark play and represented himself well and will probably get an increased opportunity because of it.”
Reserve backs Chris Rainey and Baron Batch combined for only three carries against the Broncos.
INJURY FRONT
It appears that injuries to two starters on the offensive line — right tackle Marcus Gilbert and right guard Ramon Foster — aren’t serious. Gilbert suffered a hyper-extended knee in Denver while Foster had what Tomlin described as an “optical migraine of some kind.”
“With blurred vision and so forth, we were going to use extreme caution,” Tomlin said. “He wasn’t able to return to the football game (but) it appears to be a non-issue moving forward.”
Tomlin said that both Gilbert and Foster will probably play Sunday against the Jets.
“Gilbert may be limited in the early part of the week but it won’t stop him from participating in this upcoming game,” Tomlin said.
In other injury news:
Linebacker James Harrison, who didn’t play in Denver due to a nagging knee injury, worked out Monday and will run again today. His status for Sunday will be determined by how his knee reacts to any work he does at practice the next few days.
Running back Rashard Mendenhall also didn’t play in Denver as he recovers from off-season knee surgery
“We’ll see how the week takes us,” Tomlin said. “I thought he had a good week last week. He’s done a nice job with the things we’ve asked him to do and we’ll just continue to move forward and put our heads together as the week unfolds and see if he’s the guy for us this week.”
Strong safety Troy Polamalu suffered a right calf strain in Denver. He will be limited at practice this week but is expected to play against the Jets.

Darrelle Revis not cleared for contact
Posted by Josh Alper on September 12, 2012, 12:14 PM EDT

The Jets returned to the practice field on Wednesday, but cornerback Darrelle Revis won’t be able to join his teammates.

Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com reports that Revis has been cleared to resume physical activity after suffering a concussion in the season-opening victory over the Bills. That means he can run and lift, but he hasn’t yet been cleared for contact and, as a result, won’t be able to participate in practice. Missing practice shouldn’t be a huge deal for a player with Revis’ experience and the fact that he’s been given some clearance would seem to bode well for his chances of playing against the Steelers.

Ultimately that choice isn’t in the hands of Revis or the coaches. As Florio pointed out on Tuesday, Revis’ status is up to an independent neurologist because of the NFL’s concussion protocols. The fact that the Jets are calling it a “mild” concussion means nothing because a player either has or hasn’t been concussed under the terms of the program. Revis will have to pass all of the tests before he’s allowed to get back on the field.

If he can’t, the Jets will turn to Kyle Wilson as a starting corner across from Antonio Cromartie. Wilson had an interception against Buffalo, but he’s still a big step down from Revis on the field.

(I love the first comment below the story: "Antonio Cromartie clears himself from contact" )
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Revis cleared for physical activity

http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/darrelle-revis-new-york-jets-cleared-for-physical-activity-after-concussion-091212FLORHAM PARK, N. J. (AP)
Darrelle Revis is a step closer to getting back on the field for the New York Jets.
The star cornerback, who suffered what the team called a ''mild concussion'' in last Sunday's victory over the Buffalo Bills, was cleared Wednesday to resume physical activity - running and lifting weights - but he's still not allowed to participate in contact drills.

''As the week goes on, we hope he can progress further and do more things,'' coach Rex Ryan said. ''But obviously, we will follow NFL protocol and lean on the trainers and doctors.''

Revis did not practice Wednesday, but it's an encouraging sign that the All-Pro cornerback is resuming normal activities. Revis must be cleared by the team physician and an independent neurological consultant, per NFL protocol, to practice and play at Pittsburgh on Sunday.

The hope is that Revis will be able to practice on a limited basis Thursday and then put in a full session Friday.

Revis was injured when he dived to tackle C.J. Spiller and was accidentally kicked in the head by teammate Bart Scott.

If Revis can't play on Sunday against the Steelers, nickelback Kyle Wilson would start in his place. Each had an interception in the Jets' 48-28 rout of the Bills.

Wide receiver Jeremy Kerley also did not practice after waking up with a stiff lower back.

''I asked him if he came down with the Pittsburgh flu,'' Ryan joked. ''I've seen it happen. They're a very physical football team.''

Kerley was selected as the AFC special teams player of the week after returning a punt 68 yards for a score. He also caught a 12-yard touchdown pass, becoming the first player since St. Louis' Az-Zahir Hakim in 2000 to score on a catch and a punt return in a season opener.

Kerley is expected to play Sunday, but Wilson would step in for him as the punt returner if he can't. Clyde Gates, signed off waivers from Miami last week, could be active and serve in Kerley's role as the slot receiver

Jon Dwyer (foot) misses Steelers practice

Sept. 12, 2012

Jonathan Dwyer was held out of Steelers practice on Wednesday with a foot injury.

It's a new injury for Dwyer, who wasn't known to be hurt in Sunday's loss. It would be a bigger concern if coach Mike Tomlin hadn't said Tuesday that Dwyer has earned an "increased opportunity." It's doubtful Tomlin would be talking Dwyer up if he thought he wouldn't play in Week 2. His status should be updated no later than Thursday afternoon.

Crap...now we may be down another Hall of Famer in Dwyer.

I thought Redman was the guy who was much more likely to injure himself due to his running style?

Redman proved that you can avoid a lot of contact only gaining 1.8 yards per carry or essentially just falling forward at the line of scrimmage for a 6' tall man.
