NFLPA agrees to rule changes: IR Rules!!!

Excellent news for DeCastro! Someone just gained a roster spot.

The NFL Players Association and management council have approved rule changes involving the injured reserve list and trade deadline, according to a league source.
The IR rule change, voted on by owners in May, provides an extra roster spot to temporarily replace a player who suffers a major injury but would be able to return for the second half of the season.
Under the current rules, if a player suffers a major injury before the regular-season opener and the team doesn't have the roster space to carry him until he's healthy, the player is put on IR and is lost for the season.
There are certain restrictions to the injured list rule, the biggest being only players placed on IR after 4 p.m. ET on September 4, will be eligible to be activated.
For 2012 only, the parties also agreed to a transition procedure that permits clubs to return to their 53-player active list one player placed on IR at the start of preseason training camp. That election must be made by 9 p.m. ET on Friday.
Also, the trade deadline will be extended from after the sixth week of the regular season to after the eighth.

I'm slightly confused....cuts need to be made by tomorrow, but the IR player who is eligible to return must be placed there after Sept. 4th. So I take that to mean that someone still must be cut and exposed to waivers to get to the 53 players right now, but come Sept. 4th at 4 PM the Steelers can then put Decastro on the short term IR and bring that other previously cut player back?

That's good for the 53rd man to make the roster.

The way the rule is in play, someone will need to be cut...DeCastro kept and then he'll go on IR with that someone getting signed back on the active roster after the 4th.

So there is a potential to lose your 53rd guy if another team claims him. Wonder if teams will cut their 53rd guy early to throw off other teams?

Or cut Charlie Batch then sign him back. No one else is going to sign him in the mean time, and then you also wouldn't owe him his entire salary guaranteed if he isn't on your roster for the first week.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Batch could easily be a candidate for a maneuver like this. I'm pretty sure that they've done things like this with him in the past as well.

I was assuming they were only keeping 2 QBs this year...it will be interesting to see.

Great news for DeCastro and the team. Let's hope the post-surgery news allows him to hit the field as soon as possible.
