At least a dozen or so more more also claimed.

Front Offices are much busier than I had figured this day. I really only thought a handful of the close to 1200 players cut this week would be claimed. I suppose I was influenced by the Steelers who hardly ever have players claimed. Someone mentioned that Rasheem Harris, who I could have cared less and of course Butler who was well liked by many. [me too]

I only brought this up because it is timely and also I do not believe any players the Steelers waive/cut will be acquired/claimed.

Oh! I found this stuff on nfl.com/transactions. There are already a few players picked up from the early cuts this week.

I wonder if any teams out there are claiming guys just for the sake of learning about other teams and then gonna cut them anyways?

I don't know why they were claimed. I was just surprised so many were claimed. But, it wasn't only the bottom teams that were doing the claiming, I noticed the Pats and Jets were pretty active also.

In your earlier post, you mentioned a number of positions that you would be looking at. Well, tomorrow a lot of players will be waived. I suppose everyone will look them over. I still think as I posted in your earlier thread that I would keep my eyes open for an ILB type. Stephenson is out for a while and Ivy was waived. Really thin there.

I'd say FB is a possibility. Most teams will keep just one. There should be 2 or 3 decent FBs cut. I like Will Johnson as a receiver, but he does not mow down linebackers (despite his best efforts).
Even if Bill Belichick was getting an atomic wedgie, his face would look exactly the same.

---Being just a casual fan, I usually don't pay any attention to this stuff, but this year it has helped speed up the off season.

As far a Johnson goes, I completely agree. I tried to watch his blocking. Frankly, I did not think it existed. But as far as picking up a FB, I'm beginning to think I'm leaning with those that want to do away with the position completely. Find a way to run without one.

I mean like they tried the Tank a couple years ago. He would completely miss his man it seemed. Quite a few fans were never thrilled with D. Johnson either. Puzzling what seems like a not really difficult assignment position is so hard to find someone who can do it well.

Yeah, he busted with Buffalo, but he did have 6 sacks as a situational pass rusher for the Jets last year.

Looking at the Steelers roster today, there are 12 LB's listed.

6 of them are OLB and 6 are ILB

As of today Marshall McFadden and Brandon Tate are the bu's to Larry Foote and L. Timmons.

Do you think the Steelers will be looking for an ILB?

Today many will be waived, but just out of curiousity I looked at some of the LB's cut in the first bunch. Almost all were OLB's but several were not. On their profiles I was surprised to see almost all of them exceeded 70 on their KEI's. Talk about a head scratcher. That number is usually reserved for HOF or perennial all-pros. This is more evidence that the guys that believe the best scout is your own eyes are right. But anyway, here are several from the 1st cut list that some may recognize.

    Danny Batten

    Josh Linham

Some others were Adrien Cole LaTech, Max Gruder Pitt, Marcus McGraw Houston etc.

All of these players looked interesting. I would suppose that the later cuts today should be interesting also. We probably do not need anyone but with all the injuries it would not hurt to look.

These are the 2 on the Roster.

    Marshall McFadden

I would say that right now, James Harrison or Jason Worilds would kick inside if an ILB was needed.

Hopefully, that will not be necessary. But frankly, that OLB to ILB almost never works. But, in an emergency if there is no choice what else?

IIRC a few years ago in an emergency Faneca had to play LT. Carnell Lake had to be used as a corner. These were HOF type players and they were really only okay at the change. I think maybe early James H. did some Inside stuff, but really this does not work usually. Even great players have a hard time making it work.

How did M. McFadden do. Are they going to keep him? The other one I really did not notice at all. I'm surprised there is no concern on this.
