"I left early in the morning. Some might say too damn early for what time they let people into practice. But if you want good spots for autographs or to view practice you beat the crowd. So I arrrived at camp at 9 AM. A half an hour before the next fan showed up. Yeah.... I was the first fan there.

Official time they let you in? 12

Turned on the road that had a sign posted for camp parking. As I did the previous time I was at camp a year ago. So I turn around and park by the stop sign off to the right. Cars arrive later and park behind me. Security arrives around 12, and this year wasn't escorted to the parking area. As I was in years past. Security just points and tells me to drive down to the next guy. Approaching him I start to get annoyed as I see a slew of cars parked on the right side. In a area I know isn't designated. I make sure the security guard is aware of this. Obviously they aren't educating the newbies too well. As the kid should have redirected the cars back to the correct staging area. You know the one where the sign points to when you come in. So the guy lets this handicapped driver in. And tells me ok you guys follow. So I do. When I get to where that handicapped vehicle is supposed to park. This girl asks me for my V I P pass. I am like what? I was just following what we were instructed to do. She has me go back to the guy who just sent us... so obviously the wrong area to park. I get back to the road and by now that line has left. I am pissed. I tell security what happened and they tell me/us that they are going to see what they can do for us. So when I get to the guy in charge of security for the field. He knows absolutely nothing about what took place. In the confusion some of our group was here and there. So we maybe found 11 fans from the original ones who arrived first..I then explain to this guy what happened. As a result they shot us to the front of the line around 1:20. So that ended well. As well as can be expected. For the ones we could find that was originally with us that is.

For me there has always been 3 money spots for autographs

Plus there is tips to get them while you stand there as they approach. My three spots?

Outside the door of the building the players come out of before practice. You can stand on either side of the gates. When they close. You are stuck on that side of the gate until the players reach the field. So its either the side you approach or the other side. The other side later at the far end a few players come out after practice after getting cleaned up that you can normally get. (Keisel for one) A plus? A lot of it is shaded.Compared to the areas down the beaten path that the sun beats down on your ass like a pressure cooker.

The stands by the one practice field hasn't been around that long. The Steelers encourage the players to sign there. To encourage people to sit in the stands.

On the field close to the Steeler store. There is a spot parallel to the practice field. Some players walk over.... then walk to the left or right..(Hines was one who was there regularly)

    Tips

Water/gatorade,sunblock,chairs,camera, a umbrella. Are your friends. They search for alcohol in the coolers, a flask on your person if you are a drinker will work.

As was mentioned get there early for good spots.

For autographs? Pics of the individual player or something unique like a throwback jersey of said player, or large poster always has worked for me. Sure they sign footballs, hats, helmets. But when you are fighting( figure of speech for me, for some maybe not) for a autograph you want something that grabs their attention. As often they skip around to sign.

Bring money for eats if you like and there is a Steeler store and a college campus store that you can purchase items.
This is great. Thanks so much!!! I wonder if they let let you in at 12 for the 2:55 practice??

    1. The practice that is open to the public is at 2:55p.m. - what time should we plan on getting there?? Also, what will our access be to the players? Armpit Jr. is so excited about meeting players, getting pics, autographs, etc. I just don't want him to be disappointed.

    2. What is the UPMC Steelers Experience? It runs from 1:30-6p.m. Is it something we should do? Should we go before the 2:55p.m. practice? Will we have enough time after practice??

I appreciate any and all help/suggestions. This will be my first time going to training camp. Just want to know what to expect when I get there. Thanks!!
Hey that sounds like alot of fun, do you have enough room for 1 more? If you do would you mind swinging by south east Wyoming and pick me up? I could pay up to $3.97 for gas, and I really don't eat that much.

Fans Guide to 2012 Steelers Training Camp
    July 25, 2012 7:39 pm
    Peter Diana / Post-Gazette

    Steelers 2012 schedule

Kickoff: Up to 90 players will report to camp Wednesday, with practice opening Friday. An NFL rule changes allows for 10 more players for the majority of camp. Receiver Mike Wallace and offensive lineman David DeCastro, the Steelers' No. 1 draft pick, remain unsigned. They are their only unsigned players.

Where: Saint Vincent College, Route 30, Latrobe. This marks the Steelers' 47th consecutive summer at the school, and the fifth summer playing on Chuck Noll Field, named after the legendary Steelers coach.

Getting there: From Pittsburgh, take the Parkway East to the Monroeville Interchange on the Turnpike. Go east to the Irwin Exchange (No. 67). Take Route 30 East about 17 miles to the entrance to Saint Vincent College and follow the signs. ... From Route 70, exit at New Stanton and take 119 North to Route 30, then head east. From Harrisburg and points east, take the Turnpike to exit 91, Donegal. Turn left onto PA Route 31 East, 1/4-mile to left turn at PA Route 711 North, 14 miles to left turn at U.S. Route 30 West, 10 miles to right turn at Saint Vincent. From Erie and points north, take Interstate 79 South to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, head east and follow directions from Pittsburgh. By airplane, the Westmoreland County Airport is across Route 30 from the campus. ... By rail, Amtrak (800-872-7245) offers passenger service with stops in Latrobe. From Pittsburgh and points west, the train pulls in at 8:11 a.m. From points east, 6:41 p.m.

Parking: Parking is remains free at designated areas on the Saint Vincent campus.

Practices: They are open and free to the public in the afternoon, most days between 2:55 and 5 p.m. All practices are scheduled for afternoons at Saint Vincent College except for a night practice Aug. 3 at 7 p.m. at Latrobe Stadium. Weather and unforeseen circumstances can alter the schedule and those changes will be noted on post-gazette.com. The first open practice is Friday and the last one open to the public is Aug. 17.

Getting around: Campus opens to fans two hours before the start of an open practice. There are restricted areas. An information booth is near the field, and campus security can answer questions.

Where to watch: The Steelers practice on four fields with plenty of viewing space surrounding them. Fans can watch from the hillsides or along a fence that rings the practice fields. There is bleacher seating at Chuck Noll Field that provides excellent views of the main practice areas. There are also handicap accessible areas.

What to bring: Blanket, lawn chair, binoculars, sunglasses, sunscreen, kids, food, soft drinks, water, camera, friends, pen, Sharpie, autograph book, Terrible Towel, football, good moods.

Refreshments: There are concession stands near the fields, as well as within the Robert S. Carey Student Center, northwest of the fields. Fans can bring in refreshments as well.

1` A Steelers merchandise trailer inside the Steelers Experience on the hill above the practice fields will sell just about anything you want. If you can't find it there, or perhaps would like some Saint Vincent merchandise, check the bookstore in the student union. This time of year the campus bookstore sells more black-and-yellow than its usual blue-and-white. The bookstore is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays of open practice, and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends of open practice.

Banned: Alcohol, drugs, whistles, video cameras, profanity, graffiti, pests, pets, vocal Ravens fans and smoking indoors.

To get autographs, photos: The Steelers do not hold an official photo day as they did for many years, but they will sign autographs during camps. Unlike some NFL teams, the Steelers do not limit autographs to certain age groups. The best chances for photos or autographs come after practice on campus. Common courtesies yield better odds. Say "Please," flash a nice smile, ask players by name and understand if a player wants to shower first. Players and coaches are cooperative far more often than not, but they are humans, so may be prone to a bad day. Don't take it personally.

Steelers Experience: Every kid dreams of being a Steelers player, and here, they can be. The Experience includes chances to punt, pass, kick and be timed in the 40-yard dash. Add in a trip to a mock locker room, a photo shoot and optional face painting, and the interactive games and activities may seem never-ending. The Experience is free and open from 1:30-6 p.m. each day of open practice. Located on the baseball field west of the football fields, letting the kids burn off some excess energy hardly takes you away from watching Big Ben.

Information: Steelers offices at UPMC Sports Performance Complex (412-432-7800) and at Saint Vincent College (724-539-8515).

Where to stay: Among the motels and hotels within a 15-mile radius of Latrobe: In Latrobe is the Wingate Inn, 724-539-0400; and the SpringHill Suites, 724-537-7800. Near Greensburg are the Hampton Inn, 724-838-8800; Comfort Inn, 724-838-7070; Knights Inn, 724-836-6100; Super 8, 724-838-8080; the Inn at Mountain View, 724-691-0570; the Courtyard Marriott, 724-834-3555; and the Ramada Inn, 724-836-6060.
