CBC’s Elliotte Friedman reports Armstrong will be bought out of the final year of his contract by the Maple Leafs and will become a free agent on July 1.
Armstrong’s final year on his deal came with a $3 million cap hit which means the Leafs will pay out two-thirds of that over the next two years. Paying out $1 million against the cap for the next two seasons to make Armstrong go away was apparently worth it to Toronto.
Armstrong had been injury-riddled during his two seasons in Toronto missing 32 games two seasons ago and playing in just 29 games this season. Armstrong’s toughness was something GM Brian Burke loved, but he just couldn’t stay healthy enough to be productive. Armstrong, meanwhile, tweeted out his thanks to Leafs fans for the fun times the past two seasons.
