Legursky signs RFA tender, stays with Steelers

Another day, another restricted free agent signs a one-year contract to stay with his former team.

Steelers offensive linemen Doug Legursky said on his Twitter page (via Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) that Legursky has signed his tender and is now under contract for the 2012 season.

Legursky, undrafted out of Marshall in 2008, has become a key member of the line. The starting left guard in 2011, Legursky also serves as the primary backup at the center position.

Injuries limited Legursky to 10 games (all starts) in 2011. In 2010, Legursky appeared in all 19 games, with four regular-season starts. He also started Super Bowl XLV in place of then-rookie Maurkice Pouncey, who missed the game with an ankle injury.

Legursky was tendered at the lowest level, giving him a $1.26 million contract. If he had signed an offer sheet with another team, the Steelers would have had only the right to match, with no draft-pick compensation.
And yet neither Legursky nor any other restricted free agent has signed an offer sheet with a new team.
Maybe teams that would sign restricted free agents now donít want to lose $36 million in cap space in two years.

Yup. Legursky is not exactly a hot commodity out there. It's sad though, that plucky small guys like this are losing their place in today's game. Nowadays, it's ALL about mass. Back in the day, we had diversity in linemen. Teams like us, the 49ers, went with quicker, trapping-type linemen. Guys like Legursky are practically extinct. David Molk from this year's draft sorta fits tha bill.

I wish there was a place for smaller, quicker athletic types, ALONG with the big maulers.

I think he could be an effective C. And we should have rolled with him at C and Pouncey at LG until we drafted a better lineman to replace him and eventually move Pouncey over to C and let Legursky be a quality backup.

Quality backup swing center-guard on gamedays...nothing more. Do not want to rely on him to be a starter for any significant length of time if at all possible.

NFL player locker room talk: Discussing what can be done about racial inequality and criminal justice reform.

Presidential locker room talk: Discussing involuntary gynecological exams.

According to the highest office in the country, some "very fine people" marched with torches in a violent protest in Charlottesville, but participating in a non-violent protest on a football field means you are an S.O.B. who should be fired.

Completely agree 100%....Legursky is the perfect 1st guy off the bench at G/C!!!

Seems like we continue to strive for mediocrity on the OL with the signings of Foster, Essex and Legursky. Ben will see the training room a lot this season and unfortunately when he goes down so does our season.

I don't think that's necessarily the point. Legursky is the type to have around that can play both guard and center adequately. I put him and Essex in the Nick Eason category. They can go in in a pinch and it's not devastating to your team.
