Crosby out indefinitely with concussion-like symptoms again

    Sidney Crosby out indefinitely
    Associated Press
    Updated: December 12, 2011, 1:13 PM ET

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby is out indefinitely with concussion-like symptoms.

Crosby said Monday he noticed a recurrence of the problems that sidelined him for more than 10 months earlier this year following a 3-1 loss to Boston last week.

Crosby sat out Pittsburgh's two-game road trip to Philadelphia and New York as a precaution but said he's noticed familiar symptoms during light workouts over the weekend.

The 24-year-old former MVP said there is no timetable for his return but he will definitely not play on Tuesday against Detroit.

Crosby has 12 points in eight games this season, but hasn't scored a goal since netting two in his season debut on Nov. 23 against the Islanders.

Crosby called the setback beyond frustrating but stressed it was important to be safe.

    Sidney Crosby to consult specialist

    Associated Press
    Updated: January 16, 2012

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby will meet with a specialist this week because of lingering concussion-like symptoms.

Crosby hasn't played since Dec. 5 following a recurrence of the symptoms that sidelined him for more than 10 months last year. The team says Crosby will work with chiropractic neurologist Dr. Ted Carrick, who treated Crosby for similar symptoms last summer.

The 24-year-old star skated with his teammates for the first time in more than a month last Friday, a first step in what could be another long comeback. He continues to deal with dizziness and headaches and doctors have not cleared him to exert himself at a high level.

"The motion stuff is still a little bit iffy," Crosby said last Friday. "I want to make sure I give it a fair shot, but at the same time I know it's something I can improve."

Carrick worked closely with Crosby last summer after Crosby's progress slowed. Carrick said in September that Crosby would have a "very good outcome" following his rehab.

Crosby vowed to return this season, and he was spectacular in his season debut on Nov. 21, scoring two goals against the New York Islanders and had 12 points in eight games.

Yet all the good feeling faded after getting jostled around in a loss to Boston on Dec. 5.

There is no timetable for Crosby's return and though he called the chance to join his teammates on the ice a "positive step" it was also largely symbolic.

The 2009 NHL MVP is still uncertain when he'll be able to practice, let alone suit up for a game.

"Sidney has made a lot of progress but he is still having some symptoms, so this is the next step in his recovery," Penguins general manager Ray Shero said. "Obviously he won't be back in the lineup until he is symptom-free."

Unlike last January, when Crosby took an obvious shot to the head in successive games, there was no single play that led to the issues reappearing.

"It's a tough injury," Crosby said. "It's not always clear-cut all of the time. Now I feel like I know a lot more about what I'm feeling and how to improve it. I think being more familiar helps a bit."

The Penguins have struggled without their captain. A Stanley Cup contender with Crosby in the lineup, Pittsburgh has slipped to eighth in the Eastern Conference, though the team did sweep games in Florida and Tampa Bay over the weekend.

The victories came after Crosby's teammates made a very public display of support, taping a "C" on their jerseys as he joined them for a relatively informal game day skate.

Crosby's silence during his current rehab -- he hadn't spoken publicly in more than a month since being injured -- led some to question coach Dan Byslma about the mystery surrounding Crosby's status.

"I've been doing this long enough to know that if there's information to give, it's part of my role and responsibility that comes with what I do to provide that and I've always been willing to do that," Crosby said. "But if there's no information to be given, then I'm not going to give any or make something up."

Agent: Sidney Crosby has hurt neck

    Updated: January 29, 2012
By Craig Custance and Pierre LeBrun | ESPN.com

OTTAWA -- Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby isn't just dealing with symptoms from post-concussion syndrome. His agent, Pat Brisson, confirmed to ESPN.com Saturday night that Crosby has a neck injury and that third-party doctors will be reviewing MRIs within the next 24 to 48 hours to determine the severity of the injury.

"The good news is he's safe," Brisson told ESPN.com. "It's treatable, which is positive."

The Penguins later released a full statement on Crosby's condition.

    Burnside: Crosby Injury Raises Questions
The fact that third-party doctors will be examining MRIs over the next couple of days to determine exactly what was going on with Sidney Crosby's neck raises a whole range of questions about how this all went down, writes Scott Burnside. Story

"The diagnosis of Dr. Robert S. Bray, a neurological spine specialist based in Los Angeles, is that Sidney Crosby had suffered a neck injury in addition to a concussion," the release read. "Dr. Bray reports that the neck injury is fully healed. Those findings will be evaluated by independent specialists over the next few days. The most important goal all along has been Sidney's return to full health, and we are encouraged that progress continues to be made."

After visiting with the doctors in Atlanta and Los Angeles, Crosby returned to Pittsburgh where he skated Saturday. Following Saturday's Board of Governors meeting in Ottawa, Penguins general manager Ray Shero said Crosby will continue skating and working out as he has for the past week.

"Hopefully we'll see next week as to where he is and we'll get the reports from California and compare notes to what's been done so far," Shero said. "We want to continue to look to see how we can get this under control and manageable so he can return to play."

Crosby hasn't played since Dec. 5 after concussion-like symptoms returned, and Shero stressed that Crosby won't be back in the lineup until those symptoms are 100 percent under control. But the Penguins GM has seen enough progress that he remains hopeful Crosby will be back some time this season.

"He's not going to (play) until those symptoms resolve. Hopefully (we'll) have him back at some point here soon," Shero said. "Let's just see what happens this week once we get some more information from his trip to California. I'm optimistic he's going to play."

Great news! Man, with how well this team has been playing of late, just imagine the possibilities if both Crosby and Letang are good to go by the start of the playoffs. Sky's the limit, baby!!!

    Crosby Cleared For Contact
    Tuesday, 03.06.2012 / 12:29 PM
    Features By Sam Kasan

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has been cleared for full contact, but there is no timetable for a possible return to the lineup.

“I was cleared to do contact,” said Crosby, who resumed contact practice with his teammates Tuesday afternoon. “We’ll see how that goes. There is no real timetable, but it’s a good step. Hopefully, I can keep the momentum and get out there soon.”

Crosby, who has been out of the lineup since Dec. 6 with concussion-like symptoms and a neck injury, was experiencing headaches, but has been symptom free for “a few days.”

“I’ve been through this before,” Crosby said. “Contact is the big step. It’s nice to be symptom free, but it’s not as fulfilling until you get out there. I just want to make sure that I take the right steps here and get back out there soon.”

Crosby will try to get through the next few days of practicing with contact before making any decision on returning to game action.

“I’ll give myself days with contact,” he said. “We have two more practices this week. No sooner than Sunday, I would say, but I’m not going to sit here and put a date on it. It would be total guesswork. I just want to make sure I get through these days fine and that would be a great decision to make if I get to that point.”

Crosby, 24, had been skating with teammates sporadically on a non-contact basis since Feb. 6. The team certainly welcomed the opportunity to provide their captain with some contact Tuesday.

“There were a lot of bumps,” Crosby said. “As soon as they knew I could get contact I was getting a lot of bumps, not even in drills. The lineup was a dangerous place to be today. It was fun to be out there with them and hopefully it’s a regular occurrence.

“I don’t think you’ll ever get what you’ll get in the game. There are the odd times in practice where that may happen. But as far as getting an elbow to the head or shoulder to the face, that won’t really happen in practice.”

On Jan. 31 Crosby was diagnosed with a soft-tissue neck injury that could be causing neurological symptoms, which are similar to concussion symptoms. He was treated with an injection by Dr. Robert S. Bray, a neurological spine specialist based in Los Angeles, to alleviated inflammation in the C1 and C2 joints of the neck.

“The neck stuff certainly helped,” Crosby said. “I definitely felt like I saw improvement with the work on my neck and getting that loose. Was it everything? I don’t know, but it certainly helped. It’s something I’ll continue to do and stay on.”

Crosby was off to his best professional season in 2010-11 with 32 goals and 66 points in 41 games before suffering a concussion in January 2011. The injury caused him to miss 61 consecutive games.

Crosby returned to the ice Nov. 21 against the NY Islanders, posting two goals and four points. He played eight games this season, totaling 12 points (2G-10A) before suffering from the recent setback following a Dec. 5 game against the Boston Bruins.

    He's back once again, bay-bee!!!

I understand about playing him less minutes to start, but I still wouldn't put him with Cooke and Kennedy.

For this game, I'd keep the top line of Neal-Malkin-Kunitz intact (obviously), I'd put the old #3 line of Cooke-Staal-Kennedy as the #2 line, and ease Crosby in with Sullivan and Dupuis, getting 3rd line minutes. As he gets back into his groove and can increase his minutes, I'd go for a Staal-Crosby-Dupuis line.

Not sure that I love him on the point one the power play right now either...Sullivan has been doing a great job for us bring up the puck and distributing from the blue line. For now, I'd keep the top PP unit intact, and have Crosby on the #2 PP unit with Staal, Duper, and a couple of defensemen.

Crosby is Back; Will Play Thursday at New York

    Sidney Crosby is back.

The Penguins captain will return to the lineup Thursday night in New York against the Rangers.

"I feel good and the plan is to play Thursday," he said following practice on Tuesday at Southpointe. "I had a good practice and I'm looking forward to getting out there Thursday."

Crosby, who began full contact practice a week ago, has been out of the lineup since Dec. 6 with concussion-like symptoms and a neck injury, missing the last 40 games.

Crosby worked on a line with Matt Cooke and Tyler Kennedy at practice, as well as on the point on the top power-play unit. And those are the spots he will start off playing Thursday.

"We want to get him back in the mix, but keeping his minutes a little bit closer to 15," head coach Dan Bylsma said. "That's one of the reasons for him putting him with (Cooke) and (Kennedy). I've always told him he could be a Selke winner. He's going to have his chance here with Cooke and Kennedy."

    Crosby agrees with Bylsma's decision.

“I wouldn’t see coach (Bylsma) putting me with a different pairing after missing this much time," Crosby said. "I’m sure he’s trying to get guys used to playing with one another. In any game different line combinations are common, but for the most part that’s who I’ll be with.

“(Playing the point) is a different spot for me. I played there in juniors so it’s been a few years since I’ve been back there. I like it. I’m able to see a lot of the ice and have (Evgeni Malkin) with the big shot on the sidewall. My job is to distribute the puck amongst everyone. When he’s shooting the puck like that, just give it to him in that area.”

Crosby was off to his best professional season in 2010-11 with 32 goals and 66 points in 41 games before suffering a concussion in January 2011. The injury caused him to miss 61 consecutive games.

He was treated with an injection by Dr. Robert S. Bray, a neurological spine specialist based in Los Angeles, to alleviated inflammation in the C1 and C2 joints of the neck.

Crosby said he feels much better about his recovery this time around as opposed to his previous comeback in November.

“I feel a little bit better knowing what to expect,” he said. “It’s just easier going through it this time. That first game (against the Islanders) was pretty overwhelming. It was a lot of fun, but that being said I’ll take it more in stride this time.”

Crosby isn’t sure how many minutes he’ll play against the first-place Rangers, but he plans on slowly working his way back into form.

“We’ll make sure I get better every game, but I’ll pace myself a bit with the schedule,” he said. “It’s going to be draining enough to get back into it.”

    Shero excited for Crosby's return

    Tuesday, 03.13.2012 / 4:00 PM / Features
By Shawn P. Roarke | NHL.com Senior Writer

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Sidney Crosby announced Tuesday that he would return for a crucial Atlantic Division contest Thursday against the New York Rangers.

While Crosby was delivering his long-awaited news to the media in Pittsburgh, Penguins General Manager Ray Shero was ensconced in a board room at the Boca Raton Beach Club, discussing the minutiae of potential rule changes during Day 2 of the NHL's GM meetings.

Have no fear, though -- the good news travelled fast.

"He's worked hard to try to get back, and like I've said for a while, he's a hockey player that wants to play the game of hockey and I know our team is looking forward to him back in our lineup and looking forward to Thursday night," Shero said just moments after popping out of the meeting room.

Crosby has been out of the Penguins' lineup since appearing in a game Dec. 5, which was the eighth game in his return from a concussion he first suffered in January 2011. Crosby had 2 goals and 10 assists in that eight-game run.

The Penguins' captain also missed the final 41 games of the 2010-11 season and the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs with the concussion, which developed after he was hit hard in successive games Jan. 1 and Jan. 5, 2011. Crosby sat out the first 20 games of this season before making his comeback on Nov. 21.

Crosby was cleared for contact a week ago and returned to practice, but he didn't believe he had absorbed enough contact in drills to play a home game Sunday against the Bruins. Now he has declared himself ready to re-enter the NHL.

"He feels great," Shero said. "There's no symptoms. It's three months now, so he has had lots of time to heal and train and get ready to play the game again.

This January, Crosby met with specialists other than those who have been treating him in Pittsburgh, and he was diagnosed and treated for a soft-tissue injury in his neck. Crosby believes this diagnosis helped get him back on the ice before the end of the season.

Shero was unsure how much the neck treatments played in Crosby's return, but he knows this is an opportunity that Crosby has been training for relentlessly since he was cleared for on-ice activities, which most often occurred with just the Penguins' other injured players or by himself.

"The stuff he has done off the ice, he is in great shape," Shero said. "This isn't a guy that has been off for three months and hasn't done anything. He's obviously in great shape. He needs some games and I think that was a goal for him to come back this season and not come back for the first, second or third game of the playoffs.

"He wanted to come back as soon as he could -- obviously to help the hockey team, but also to get back in the swing of things and prepare for the playoffs."

And there is little doubt that adding one of the game's elite talents -- Crosby had 32 goals and 66 points in 41 games last season before he was sidelined by his first concussion -- boosts Pittsburgh's chances to go deep in the playoffs.

In fact, Shero sees it as more important than any acquisition at the NHL trade deadline, which passed last month without a move by the Penguins.

"Up to the trade deadline, we did scenarios with him in the lineup, with him out of the lineup and what the lines might look like, but to have him back in… It's always in the back of your mind, maybe he might come back, and if he does, how great that would be for our hockey team," Shero said. "We're potentially getting Kris Letang back at some point, and adding two players like that is great for our team. He (Crosby) is the captain of our team, so it is important for us."

Letang, the team's top defenseman, is out with a concussion, as well. However, he skated again Tuesday and Shero hopes Letang will be back soon.

"As we go along this week we'll hopefully have some updates, but so far so good," Shero said.

The Penguins have three games in four days starting Thursday against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. The Pens play New Jersey on Saturday and bitter rival Philadelphia on Sunday.

Shero said such a heavy workload shouldn't impact Crosby in his return. Shero also confirmed that Crosby will start against the Rangers on Pittsburgh's third line -- between Matt Cooke and Tyler Kennedy -- allowing coach Dan Bylsma to keep the team's top two lines, which currently are experiencing plenty of success, intact.

"We'll keep those top two lines the same and as the game goes on we might move him (Crosby) around a bit, depending on how he is feeling and how the game is going," Shero said. "Those things, as to where he is going to play and how much, I will leave to the coach. Sid will tell him how he is playing.

"The three (games) in four days -- we just have to get some feedback from him as we go along to as he is feeling. If there is any reason to pull back, then we will do that. If not, it's certainly full steam ahead." Author: Shawn P. Roarke | NHL.com Senior Managing Editor

It has been interesting to see this team right on the heels of the Rangers for top seed in the East (1 point down with the same # of games left to play)...the sentiment seems to be that other teams respect the Rangers for the consistency and overall depth, but that they absolutely FEAR the Penguins.

We lead the league in scoring right now (even though Sidney Crosby has the same number of goals as Niskanen, Engelland, Asham, Vitale, and Jeffrey right now), have solid depth on the blueline, and of course, the Flower in between the pipes. Other than the OT loss to Philly, every other game since Crosby has been back with Fleury in net has been a 5-2 or 5-1 score (the 8-4 good and 8-4 bad games were both with Theissen in there).

Our top line in the best in the business, and although I thought at first that putting Crosby with someone like Matt Cooke would only be a temporary thing until Sid got his full game wind, 87 has managed to transform the Cookie Monster into the kind of guy that we could use the way Philly uses Sideshow Bob Hartnell with Claude Giroux...only since Cooke has been seemingly (and unbelievably) striving for Lady Byng consideration this season, he is not nearly the prick that Scott the Biter is anymore.
