Sidney Crosby out indefinitely

PITTSBURGH -- Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby is out indefinitely with concussion-like symptoms.

Crosby said Monday he noticed a recurrence of the problems that sidelined him for more than 10 months earlier this year following a 3-1 loss to Boston last week.

Crosby sat out Pittsburgh's two-game road trip to Philadelphia and New York as a precaution but said he's noticed familiar symptoms during light workouts over the weekend.

The 24-year-old former MVP said there is no timetable for his return but he will definitely not play on Tuesday against Detroit.

Crosby has 12 points in eight games this season, but hasn't scored a goal since netting two in his season debut on Nov. 23 against the Islanders.

Crosby called the setback beyond frustrating but stressed it was important to be safe.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

    He's back once again, bay-bee!!!

I understand about playing him less minutes to start, but I still wouldn't put him with Cooke and Kennedy.

For this game, I'd keep the top line of Neal-Malkin-Kunitz intact (obviously), I'd put the old #3 line of Cooke-Staal-Kennedy as the #2 line, and ease Crosby in with Sullivan and Dupuis, getting 3rd line minutes. As he gets back into his groove and can increase his minutes, I'd go for a Staal-Crosby-Dupuis line.

Not sure that I love him on the point one the power play right now either...Sullivan has been doing a great job for us bring up the puck and distributing from the blue line. For now, I'd keep the top PP unit intact, and have Crosby on the #2 PP unit with Staal, Duper, and a couple of defensemen.

Crosby is Back; Will Play Thursday at New York

    Sidney Crosby is back.

The Penguins captain will return to the lineup Thursday night in New York against the Rangers.

"I feel good and the plan is to play Thursday," he said following practice on Tuesday at Southpointe. "I had a good practice and I'm looking forward to getting out there Thursday."

Crosby, who began full contact practice a week ago, has been out of the lineup since Dec. 6 with concussion-like symptoms and a neck injury, missing the last 40 games.

Crosby worked on a line with Matt Cooke and Tyler Kennedy at practice, as well as on the point on the top power-play unit. And those are the spots he will start off playing Thursday.

"We want to get him back in the mix, but keeping his minutes a little bit closer to 15," head coach Dan Bylsma said. "That's one of the reasons for him putting him with (Cooke) and (Kennedy). I've always told him he could be a Selke winner. He's going to have his chance here with Cooke and Kennedy."

    Crosby agrees with Bylsma's decision.

“I wouldn’t see coach (Bylsma) putting me with a different pairing after missing this much time," Crosby said. "I’m sure he’s trying to get guys used to playing with one another. In any game different line combinations are common, but for the most part that’s who I’ll be with.

“(Playing the point) is a different spot for me. I played there in juniors so it’s been a few years since I’ve been back there. I like it. I’m able to see a lot of the ice and have (Evgeni Malkin) with the big shot on the sidewall. My job is to distribute the puck amongst everyone. When he’s shooting the puck like that, just give it to him in that area.”

Crosby was off to his best professional season in 2010-11 with 32 goals and 66 points in 41 games before suffering a concussion in January 2011. The injury caused him to miss 61 consecutive games.

Crosby returned to the ice Nov. 21, 2011 against the NY Islanders, posting two goals and four points. He would play eight games, totaling 12 points (2G-10A) before suffering from the recent setback following a Dec. 5 game against the Boston Bruins.

On Jan. 31 Crosby was diagnosed with a soft-tissue neck injury that could be causing neurological symptoms, which are similar to concussion symptoms. He was treated with an injection by Dr. Robert S. Bray, a neurological spine specialist based in Los Angeles, to alleviated inflammation in the C1 and C2 joints of the neck.

Crosby said he feels much better about his recovery this time around as opposed to his previous comeback in November.

“I feel a little bit better knowing what to expect,” he said. “It’s just easier going through it this time. That first game (against the Islanders) was pretty overwhelming. It was a lot of fun, but that being said I’ll take it more in stride this time.”

Crosby isn’t sure how many minutes he’ll play against the first-place Rangers, but he plans on slowly working his way back into form.

“We’ll make sure I get better every game, but I’ll pace myself a bit with the schedule,” he said. “It’s going to be draining enough to get back into it.”

    Shero excited for Crosby's return

    Tuesday, 03.13.2012 / 4:00 PM / Features

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Sidney Crosby announced Tuesday that he would return for a crucial Atlantic Division contest Thursday against the New York Rangers.

While Crosby was delivering his long-awaited news to the media in Pittsburgh, Penguins General Manager Ray Shero was ensconced in a board room at the Boca Raton Beach Club, discussing the minutiae of potential rule changes during Day 2 of the NHL's GM meetings.

Have no fear, though -- the good news travelled fast.

"He's worked hard to try to get back, and like I've said for a while, he's a hockey player that wants to play the game of hockey and I know our team is looking forward to him back in our lineup and looking forward to Thursday night," Shero said just moments after popping out of the meeting room.

Crosby has been out of the Penguins' lineup since appearing in a game Dec. 5, which was the eighth game in his return from a concussion he first suffered in January 2011. Crosby had 2 goals and 10 assists in that eight-game run.

The Penguins' captain also missed the final 41 games of the 2010-11 season and the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs with the concussion, which developed after he was hit hard in successive games Jan. 1 and Jan. 5, 2011. Crosby sat out the first 20 games of this season before making his comeback on Nov. 21.

Crosby was cleared for contact a week ago and returned to practice, but he didn't believe he had absorbed enough contact in drills to play a home game Sunday against the Bruins. Now he has declared himself ready to re-enter the NHL.

"He feels great," Shero said. "There's no symptoms. It's three months now, so he has had lots of time to heal and train and get ready to play the game again.

This January, Crosby met with specialists other than those who have been treating him in Pittsburgh, and he was diagnosed and treated for a soft-tissue injury in his neck. Crosby believes this diagnosis helped get him back on the ice before the end of the season.

Shero was unsure how much the neck treatments played in Crosby's return, but he knows this is an opportunity that Crosby has been training for relentlessly since he was cleared for on-ice activities, which most often occurred with just the Penguins' other injured players or by himself.

"The stuff he has done off the ice, he is in great shape," Shero said. "This isn't a guy that has been off for three months and hasn't done anything. He's obviously in great shape. He needs some games and I think that was a goal for him to come back this season and not come back for the first, second or third game of the playoffs.

"He wanted to come back as soon as he could -- obviously to help the hockey team, but also to get back in the swing of things and prepare for the playoffs."

And there is little doubt that adding one of the game's elite talents -- Crosby had 32 goals and 66 points in 41 games last season before he was sidelined by his first concussion -- boosts Pittsburgh's chances to go deep in the playoffs.

In fact, Shero sees it as more important than any acquisition at the NHL trade deadline, which passed last month without a move by the Penguins.

"Up to the trade deadline, we did scenarios with him in the lineup, with him out of the lineup and what the lines might look like, but to have him back in… It's always in the back of your mind, maybe he might come back, and if he does, how great that would be for our hockey team," Shero said. "We're potentially getting Kris Letang back at some point, and adding two players like that is great for our team. He (Crosby) is the captain of our team, so it is important for us."

Letang, the team's top defenseman, is out with a concussion, as well. However, he skated again Tuesday and Shero hopes Letang will be back soon.

"As we go along this week we'll hopefully have some updates, but so far so good," Shero said.

The Penguins have three games in four days starting Thursday against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden. The Pens play New Jersey on Saturday and bitter rival Philadelphia on Sunday.

Shero said such a heavy workload shouldn't impact Crosby in his return. Shero also confirmed that Crosby will start against the Rangers on Pittsburgh's third line -- between Matt Cooke and Tyler Kennedy -- allowing coach Dan Bylsma to keep the team's top two lines, which currently are experiencing plenty of success, intact.

"We'll keep those top two lines the same and as the game goes on we might move him (Crosby) around a bit, depending on how he is feeling and how the game is going," Shero said. "Those things, as to where he is going to play and how much, I will leave to the coach. Sid will tell him how he is playing.

"The three (games) in four days -- we just have to get some feedback from him as we go along to as he is feeling. If there is any reason to pull back, then we will do that. If not, it's certainly full steam ahead." Author: Shawn P. Roarke | NHL.com Senior Managing Editor

It has been interesting to see this team right on the heels of the Rangers for top seed in the East (1 point down with the same # of games left to play)...the sentiment seems to be that other teams respect the Rangers for the consistency and overall depth, but that they absolutely FEAR the Penguins.

We lead the league in scoring right now (even though Sidney Crosby has the same number of goals as Niskanen, Engelland, Asham, Vitale, and Jeffrey right now), have solid depth on the blueline, and of course, the Flower in between the pipes. Other than the OT loss to Philly, every other game since Crosby has been back with Fleury in net has been a 5-2 or 5-1 score (the 8-4 good and 8-4 bad games were both with Theissen in there).

Our top line in the best in the business, and although I thought at first that putting Crosby with someone like Matt Cooke would only be a temporary thing until Sid got his full game wind, 87 has managed to transform the Cookie Monster into the kind of guy that we could use the way Philly uses Sideshow Bob Hartnell with Claude Giroux...only since Cooke has been seemingly (and unbelievably) striving for Lady Byng consideration this season, he is not nearly the prick that Scott the Biter is anymore.
