Steelers' Red Zone Struggles Continue In Week 9 Loss To Ravens

    by Michael Bean

The Pittsburgh Steelers deserve lots of credit for hanging as tough as they have through the first nine games of the 2011 NFL season. Of course, when you’re the defending AFC champions, you’re expected to compete again the following year, but given the rash of injuries the team has been forced to deal with, the Steelers have done an admirable job of adapting each week and resiliently finding ways to win games despite not yet playing their best football of the season.

One way the Steelers could really help themselves out is improved offensive efficiency inside the red zone. The Steelers have to be moving the ball as well as any team in the league in between the 20s, but once the throwing windows narrow inside the 20, Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers’ offense has faltered too often. Against the Patriots, the Steelers had to settle for three field goals on five red zone trips; on Sunday night against the Ravens, Pittsburgh again had to settle for three FG opportunities, this time on four red zone possessions.

Here’s how Pittsburgh stacks up in terms of red zone touchdown percentage through Week 9.

    1) Tennessee Titans….73.68 percent
    16) Seattle Seahawks….50 percent
    22) Pittsburgh Steelers…46.67 percent
    32) Tampa Bay Buccaneers….36.36 percent

If the Steelers offensive line can play as well as it did in their Week 9 loss to the Ravens, the Steelers should find themselves back in the red zone frequently in the second half of the season. If they hope to make a fourth trip to the playoffs in the five years that Mike Tomlin has been at the helm, they’d be well served increasing their TD percentage into at least the mid-50s.

It's no secret - we have major problems scoring points. We're one of the least efficient offenses in the league.

Thus far, our offense averages about 17 yards per point. Compare that with the Green Bay Packers, who need just 12 yards per point. And yes, it's been this way for the past few seasons.

I tie it directly to the lack of a strong running game. And yes, it has been that way for a couple of years now. Plus, Ben is statistically weak in red zone passing. It doesn't fit his style of waiting for a man to get open because there is no space for it to happen.

If our pass D is so bad why are we only failing at the end of games?
I lost a bet about Najee gaining 1300 yards.

"Our head coach has failed to win a playoff game for seven years in a row. His game day strategy, culture of divas, in game decisions, clock management, player evaluation, hires, and affinity with sub par starters at RB, P, and OL are holding the Steelers back. That standard remains the standard"

its come to a point where i wish we have the ball outside the 20 instead of inside the 10.

i know the running game wont get it done with 1st and goal at the 7 or more, and its too congested for the passing game

from the 20/25 we have a lot more room for the receivers to do their thing

Who's hot and not in red-zone passing

When it comes to throwing in the red zone, the windows to hit wide receivers is smaller and the decision-making is quicker. The general rule is more experienced quarterbacks have greater success inside the 20-yard line than younger ones.

That's not the case in the AFC North, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Bengals rookie quarterback Andy Dalton has thrived the most in the red zone while the division's most experienced quarterback, the Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger, has struggled the most there.

Dalton has the second-highest QBR in the red zone, throwing 11 touchdowns and no interceptions. His 1-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Gresham while fading backward showed how he could make a tough throw with pressure barreling down on him.

Roethlisberger, who ranks 19th in red-zone passing, has thrown just as many touchdowns inside the 20 as Dalton (11) but he has thrown three interceptions in that area. He's the only starting quarterback in the division who has been picked off in the red zone this season.

    Passing In The Red Zone

Quarterback Comp. Att. Yards Pct. TDs Int. QBR

    Andy Dalton, Bengals 26 42 189 61.9 11 0 94.7
    Colt McCoy, Browns 17 27 112 63.0 7 0 54.7
    Joe Flacco, Ravens 14 43 127 32.6 5 0 46.5
    Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers 23 45 172 51.1 11 3 42.3
