Raising the Debt Ceiling

I'm not really all that interested in politics, but all this recent talk about raising the debt ceiling seems crazy to me. Have we collectively lost it? Is our gov't insane?

So we raise the debt by $2.4 Trillion.

That's $8,000 per person in the US.

Seems the logical next step would be to require every family to cut a check to the gov't for $8,000 per family member to support this.

If you have a family of 4, you should have to send a check for $32,000.

Let's keep it simple.

Make Americans pay for the stupidity of the people they elect to represent them.

All this stuff about increasing taxes on the wealthy is stupid. Everyone has a vote, so if your representatives that you voted for in Washington are supporting this spending, you should be on the hook even if your broke.

If I were in Washington, I'd cut everything and lower taxes.

Get rid of Social Security, Medicare, and stop all the wars.

It would probably be really easy to cut spending if we were logical about it.

The whole concept of big government and redistribution of wealth is irritating to me.

Why can't people just take care of themselves, their families, their communities and give to charity as they see fit?

Gov't programs seem like forced enslavement to me.

We're so far away from being free, it's not even funny.

I think someone by the name of Ron Paul would be right up your ally if you truly believe in what you were just saying about lowering taxes and getting rid of medicare. Also he would audit the Federal Reserve and bring or troops home.

There is only one politician that I even consider to be looking out for the people and this country. And that is Ron Paul.

The Ames straw poll in Iowa is in 10 days. Check the results. The media wants you to think he has no chance but this time around is different.

People are sick and tired of the same ol' same ol' status que candidates. Its not right vs. left or republican vs. democrat anymore. We are all Americans here.

Its about freedom.

Thanks Obama and Congress. I now lost so much in the stock market this week, I can't afford to send the $8k check for everyone in my family.

Guess this is what they mean by double taxation.

OK, so name me one politician who doesn't support spending of some sort?

And how would you just cut social security. People have paid into it for years and those who are now collecting have it slotted into their budgets. So you would just cut it full stop? The real estate market would collapse pretty quickly if that happened.

Obama actually put long term social security reform on the budget - I honestly don't know what happened from there because I lost interest what was essentially a manufactured crisis. This same congress passed the budget that pushed the budget over the previous limit, so why they had to go back later and approve the raising the debt ceiling when they had already passed the budget is beyond me. And why there was so much drama about actually authorizing the increase is also a mystery -- unless it was political theater.

EDIT: Actually, I misspoke. It was the last Congress that passed this budget. But either way, I have a philosophical objection to the notion of the debt limit ceiling because the budget that the duly elected US Congress agreed to for the current fiscal year was passed and signed into law. If the current congress wanted to undo the budget or bring it within some limit, they should have began cutting/scaling back expenditure one-by-one.

I looked up some Social Security #s:

From 1951 to 2009 the absolute maximum amount that anyone put into SS is $124,901.

The max payout for 2011 is $2366/month.

So if someone gets SS for 20 years, that's $567k.

$567/$124 = 4.57x which is a phenomenal return.

We could afford to scale a lot of that back and wind down SS and let people take care of themselves and their families.

And if real estate is a problem, burn down the foreclosed houses and make it illegal to build any new houses.
