The New York Rangers, believed to be hot on the trail of prized free-agent Brad Richards, signed forward Michael Rupp to a three-year, $4.5 million contract Friday.

Rupp will help the Rangers fill out their bottom two lines. The 31-year-old spent the past two seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins, posting 22 goals and 14 assists while missing just two games. As a rookie with the New Jersey Devils, Rupp scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal in Game 7 against the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.

In 497 games, Rupp has 49 goals, 40 assists and 656 penalty minutes.
