    So...I-279 is gone? Wow!

In preparation for our first trip back to Pittsburgh in about two years, my wife and I were looking at a few places we plan to visit. While getting directions to one of them, I looked at a current highway map online and thought something didn't look right. "How come I can't find I-279 going into downtown? Why do I see I-376 here?" So, this morning, I finallly had some time to do some searching and read about the recent "improvements". In some ways, I think it's sad to see something like this that's been there for so long change. I'll miss seeing the old signs when we go through the Fort Pitt Tunnel tomorrow. I'm just glad I know beforehand!

    huh?

I think it's the same road. i used to live out in robinson township and I remember a sign that had a bunch of highway numbers on it for that road leading to the tunnel - 279/376/22/30/70/79 etc. I was really never sure what to call that road.

279 runs into the city from the north where it begins by branching off of 79 just south of the Wexford exit. It's still there and wont be going anywhere, seeing as how it's really the only direct road into the city from the north.

Yeah, I saw that once I got here (still here until this afternoon, a full report later). It was really odd not seeing those signs as I went up Green Tree hill into the city. Oh well. I guess I can't expect things not to change all the time.
